The German International School Sydney (GISS) presents a parenting seminar pivotal in modern approaches to children's behaviour. The Guidance Approach will be introduced by child psychologist Dr Louise Porter. This method teaches children to consider others. Open to the wider community to attend, the seminar will provide parents, carers and teachers with the same information, so that we can support each other in raising well-adjusted and confident learners.
Boasting over 30 year experience, Dr Louise Porter is a senior lecturer, consulting child psychologist and a widely published author in both academic and parenting realms. At the seminar, Dr Porter will compare and contrast two styles of parenting: controlling discipline (which uses rewards for good behaviour, punishment to stop unfavourable behaviour) and the Guidance Approach. The latter believes that children do well when they can, and that children (like adults) want to be successful. Therefore if children make a mistake it is it not because they lack incentives to behave better, but because they lack skill - the main of which is the skill to regulate their feelings and impulses.
