Tobias Mama Interview

Tobias Mama Interview

Perth Based Rapper Releases Dedication To Mother, Friends And Family Alike In Mama.

Perth based rapper Tobias plans to show appreciation to all mothers (especially his own) with his latest single "Mama" available now. The talented new wave artist incorporates a sense of community, friendship and family that is effortlessly displayed in the 'Mama' Music Video , showcasing both his talent and appreciation for the support he receives whilst pursuing his dream.

Branching out from the regular role of both the producer and artist, Tobias has called upon fellow Perth producer OJC43 to collaborate after a short conversation over social media which has fruitfully paid off and is evident with the energy and effort displayed in the highly anticipated single.

Often compared to the likes of Childish Gambino and following the mould of Michael Jackson and Allday (if we are talking local), Tobias has found himself immersed in the ever growing Perth Hip Hop scene, sharing the stage with hot acts such as Arno Faraji and Spacey Jane at festivals such as WAM Fest and Collision Festival.

Interview with Tobias

Question: How would you describe your music?

Tobias: I always have such a hard time answering this question. In the day and age we are in now, trying to fit music into a category is so hard with the amount of crossovers coming through between artists; I've had many a discussion on if genre is dead or not. I always pride myself on not sticking to one particular style for all of my tracks so I think the closest thing I can relate it to is RnB/Pop/Rap fusion.

Question: What inspired the track, Mama?

Tobias: I think really it came from the fact that every time I got in the car with my mum she would have my music be the first thing that comes out of the stereo, and I'd written all these songs about girls and relationships and just braggadocious rap but nothing directly to do with my number one supporter. So now she has a song about her she can listen to when she is on her way to work.

Question: Can you tell us about filming the video for Mama?

Tobias: We'd just wrapped shooting the video for my song 'Green Eyes.' and I came to JustPlay Media with the concept for the Mama video. Basically I wanted to show that without our foundation of supporters, like our family and friends that will be our initial fans, it makes it ten times harder to make those fans that only know you through the art. So I went messaging a whole bunch of artists that have shown love to my music, friends that support me and my family and asked if they would be a part of this video. Then I left all the rest up to JustPlay Media and as always he delivered with a video that always exceeds my vision.

Question: What did you own mother think of the track Mama?

Tobias: It's her new favourite song, beating out my track 'Blue Sun. (feat. Wesley Black)' and an assortment of Dolly Parton and Keith Urban.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Tobias: I don't know anything else or love anything else as much; it almost feels like it comes out of necessity. Music is so cathartic for both the artist and the listeners and using it to get my thoughts and feelings out has always been a major reason to motivate me to write.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Tobias: I am currently really loving Billie Eillish, her whole vibe is just so cool. Also really digging the stuff Seup, 506 and the whole team at 6KMC are putting out. As well as the homies Mali Jo$e and OJC43 are killing it right now.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Tobias: I remember watching the Michael Jackson live in Bucharest concert when I was like 3. He came in on a jetpack, I wanted a jetpack. I wanted to do what he did, so here I am 17 years later and no jet pack but I'll get there.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Tobias: I would love to do a song with Allday, I saw him live at YMCA HQ when I was 15 and since then I have been a major fan. I've always looked at his growth as an artist and his sound as an inspiration.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Tobias: A typical day would be to wake up, make a mocha with two sugars and then sit in front of a computer making beats and if I end up liking the beat sometimes it turns into a song. OR I get no work done and I spent the day watching YouTube videos (woops).

Question: What's next, for you?

Tobias: I'm planning on releasing new content every month of this year, whether it be vlogs, merch, a new single or a music video, something is coming out! I also have super cool gig with GOAT 6K on the 7th of June at the Four5Nine Bar which I am really excited for.

Question: Can you share your socials?

Tobias: I'm @Tobias_Muh on Instagram and Twitter and I am @ItsTobias on Facebook
