Voices of Angels: Twelve Days of Christmas

Voices of Angels: Twelve Days of Christmas

Christmas is once again approaching! Children across the globe start to think about their Christmas list for Santa. Adults start to plan the festive celebrations with family and friends. And in cities and towns across the world, the sounds of Christmas start to echo throughout as Christmas carols start to be heard everywhere.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Sydney Children's Choir will mark the festive season with two special concerts. The Twelve Days of Christmas pairs the days and their associated gifts of the much-loved carol with beautiful music from across the centuries.

Under the direction of Gondwana Choirs' Associate Artistic Director Sam Allchurch for the first time, the Sydney Children's Choir will perform the music of Benjamin Britten and William Mathias, alongside new music by Sally Whitwell and Joseph Twist, as well as other loved Christmas songs.

"Voices of Angels is an opportunity to escape into a Christmas fantasy land with beautiful festive music performed by young voices in the heart of the city. The concert will be an uplifting journey through the twelve days of Christmas with some stunning moments of stillness that are much needed at this busy time of year," said Sam Allchurch.

"The countdown to Christmas full on anticipation and fun, whether you're eight or eighty, and singing the The Twelve Days of Christmas is part of the Christmas tradition. However, I have pondered at moments, once I was old enough to comprehend, the relevance of a partridge in a pear tree to Christmas! I was excited to hear Sam Allchurch's proposal to theme this year's Voice of Angels concert on this famous tune, interpreted into twelve pieces, some familiar and others new. City Recital Hall is proud to continue our partnership to co-present Voices of Angels with Gondwana Choirs," said Elaine Chia, CEO of City Recital Hall.

Founded as a single ensemble by Lyn Williams AM in 1989, Sydney Children's Choir has grown to include more than 500 young people, comprising of performing choirs and training ensembles. The choir is known for its distinctive Australian choral sound, precision and discipline, honed through its world-renowned Choral Training Program.

The choir is joined by the Voices of Angels orchestra, led by Helena Rathbone.
