Jodorowsky takes the title role of a mysterious black-clad gunslinger on a whacked-out spiritual quest through the desert. Reminiscent of Bunuel and seized upon by New York's 1970s counter-culture, El Topo became the original midnight movie and was embraced by the likes of Dennis Hopper and Timothy Leary.
