Cautionary Tales for Children

Learning lessons about good behaviour has never been so absurd and amusing all at the same time. The wild imagination of comic writer Claudia O'Doherty brings to life Hilaire Belloc's early 20th century satirical poems about wayward children and their comeuppance. Expertly poking tongues at authority figures and pompous types, this mock-moralistic show-within-a-show is told by a dysfunctional family troupe of four aided by their time machine.

Celebrate the start of Engineering Week (August 2-6) - come and witness these classic examples of heritage steam engines in action. Vehicles on parade include the Cowley Steam Traction Engine - the only working Australian-made traction engine in the world - along with other historic machinery. The day also includes hay-baling demonstrations, tours of the historic Spotswood Pumping Station and a free steam train ride for the kids (don'T forget to wear closed toe shoes on the day to enjoy the ride).

The August season of Discover the Night Sky allows the chance for adults to immerse themselves in an evening astronomical experience! Enjoy a glass of wine and cheese as you are taken on a journey through the universe. A different show is running every Thursday night for the Month of August, with each show providing the opportunity to speak to the Melbourne Planetarium's Astronomer Dr Tanya Hill.

Face The Music ticket holders receive free entry to two live music showcases Friday 19 and Saturday 20 November presented by AWME (Australasian World Music Expo). The newest exhibition in the redevelopment of the Science and Life Gallery, 600 Million Years: Victoria evolves explores the big question: how did life on Earth come to be the way it is? Taking you on a journey through time, 600 Million Years brings the story of Victoria's evolution to life through animation, animatronics, models and multimedia interactives. Over millions of years Victoria has moved from the tropics to the Antarctic circle and now to temperate zone. It has been shaped by periods of volcanic activity and major climate shifts. Featuring fascinating fossils, gold, coal, dinosaurs and whales, the exhibition highlights the processes that make Victoria the special place it is today.

National Maritime Museum

Kids on Deck: Antarctic Adventures (5-12 yrs)
There'll be a raft of arts and craft where kids can make their very own magnetic toy - an icebreaker ship - while discovering all about the properties of magnets. Plus they'll find out what it's like to live and work in one of the coldest places on earth with dress ups, fishing games and more.

The hourly session will run from 10 am to 4 pm daily from 4 to 18 July. Tickets are $7 per child, adults free. For children aged 5-12 years.

Climate Change Show
This special interactive multimedia show for kids will look at greenhouse gases, climate change and their effects on the atmosphere.

The performances will take place at 10.30 am, 12 pm and 1.30 pm on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 July and entry is included in the Kids on Deck school holiday ticket.
Youth Workshops (8-14 yrs)

The first - Wearable Weaves - on 5 and 6 July will be part of the museum's NAIDOC Week celebrations. Aboriginal elder and master weaver Uncle Steven Russell from Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Art and Culture Studio will show participants how to create a wearable art work using traditional Indigenous weaving techniqies.

The workshop will run from 10 am to 12.30 pm and costs $15 per child (includes all workshop materials).

The second workshop - Young Inventors - will run on 15 and 16 July and will explore the science of magnetism. Attendees will create a kinetic system (moving object) out of pulleys and motors and even fashion their own piece of liquid art using ferrofluid sculpture techniques (where particles in oil form beautiful patterns when magnets are applied).

The workshop will run from 10 am to 1 pm and costs $20 per child (includes all workshop materials).

Ancestral power and the aesthetic explores through the Thomson collection and research the complex understandings of place, history and experience in the art and culture of Arnhem Land.

Our Children Our Future
Our Children Our Future is an exhibition by Koorie children and youth that celebrates the strength, diversity and vibrancy of Victorian Aboriginal culture. It is the result of a collaborative project between the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA), Aboriginal Elders, artists and community members from across the state. VACCA provide a series of creative workshops for Koorie children to spend time with Elders, artists and community members to learn about their culture and interpret them through song, dance and visual art. Many of the children's achievements from the workshops are on display in Our Children Our Future.
