Young Bards Returns for January School Holidays

Designed for ages 7-17 years old, our workshops are designed to challenge students with new ideas about acting and performance - and to have fun! Ranging from week-long programmes introducing students to Shakespeare to short workshops in styles such as Commedia Dell'Arte, Young Bards takes the text out of the classroom and provides students with an opportunity to get physical and enthused about theatre. Our Commedia Dell-Arte intensive workshop is run outdoors on the actual set of our production of the Comedy of Errors at the Royal Botanic Gardens!

Bankstown children will have the opportunity to experience a traditional and very special form of entertainment this summer as Centro Bankstown brings two stunning puppet shows to the centre.

Ross Browning's Puppetease, an action packed puppet cabaret combined with funky live music, will take to the stage in Centre Court between 10 and 14 January.

Using a variety of puppets including finger puppets, moving mouth puppets, glove puppets, junk puppets and muppet style puppets, Ross performs various sketches which demonstrate the diversity of the puppet world.

The Australian Body Art Carnivale

Event Manager Danielle Taylor says this year will see a magical festival experience for all ages.

"While we attract great crowds keen to watch artists at work using human bodies as their canvas, it's worth noting that the event is more than just body art," says Danielle.

"There will be feast of other entertainment including a gala launch on the Friday night with the Masked Gallery Art Walk, as well as competitions and exhibitions in pavement art, wearable art, vehicle art, indigenous art and photography, as well as world-class street performers, workshops, and a Saturday evening sunset Street Party," she says.

"Music will again form a major part of this year's Carnivale, as we partner MASC (Music Association Sunshine Coast Inc) to host the Eumundi Live music festival," Danielle says. "This will see a great line-up of free live bands on Saturday and Sunday."

This exhibition explores a ritual called Se Matebian, which takes place each year on All Souls Day and honours East Timorese ancestors. It looks at how the East Timorese community in Australia continue to practise this ritual today. Personal stories and reflections of people from the East Timorese community are shared and featured objects include a silver breast plate and head piece worn by elders during ceremonial peace, a silver jewellery box with an ancestral worship home on top, jewellery associated with ancestors, timber statues representing ancestors, hand woven baskets and East Timorese fabrics.

This exhibition explores the long-held traditional beliefs and cultural practices of contemporary West African society. Featuring over 200 objects, including colourful masks, intricately carved figures, musical instruments, beautifully decorative cloth and jewellery as well as photographs and film, this exhibition provides a window into the life of today's West African cultures. West Africa: Rhythm and Spirit encompasses six major themes - kingship and authority, fertility, pattern and adornment, divination, masks and masquerades, and trade - which reflect the diversity and dynamism of this unique and fascinating region.

Light artists, designers and architects from across Australia are invited to respond to an Expression of Interest (EOI) to deliver creative, immersive and energy-efficient light and sound installations to feature in a nightly sculpture walk during the Vivid Sydney annual festival of light, music and ideas, from 27 May - 13 June 2011.

Co-curated by artistic duo Mary-Anne and Ingo Kyriakou-Bracke, the Vivid Light installations will transform Sydney's iconic harbour-front precinct into an eclectic sensory experience, giving Australian lighting creatives the chance to have their sculptures shown alongside leading international design luminaries.

The theme for Vivid Light 2011 is Fiat Lux - Let there be Light and artists are also expected to consider the use of low-energy lighting techniques, public interaction and immersive artistic design. Vivid Light will be a free public exhibition nightly throughout the Vivid Festival.

Egypt 3D: Secrets of the Pharaohs takes us back thousands of years to explore the wonders of ancient Egypt in a modern day forensic adventure complete with tomb-raiders and hidden treasures. The creator of television's popular serial killer Dexter Morgan, Jeff Lindsay, will visit Australia next month when the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) presents Fairy Tales Re-imagined, a two-day symposium that will explore how traditional fairy tales are being reworked by visual artists, filmmakers and popular culture.

The symposium, which is open to the public, is a two-day event discussing fairy tales from an adult perspective, outside the realm of childhood fiction. Sessions will explore why fairy stories continue to enchant, entertain, fascinate and horrify adult audiences, referencing such tales as Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Bluebeard and Hansel and Gretel.
