Akoch Manhiem arrived in Australia as a Sudanese Lost Boy . He s returning to his village for the first time in almost a decade. His bags are packed and his flag is in hand but will he return Sudanese?

Also starring comedian Trent McCarthy and singer Ajak Kwai, Returning Sudanese is the hilarious and heartfelt sequel to last year s sell-out show, Turning Sudanese, which followed McCarthy s amusing integration into Melbourne s Sudanese community.

This groundbreaking new comedy, which premieres this Friday, 17 April at Northcote Town Hall, follows Akoch s journey from a world of cars and electricity to a far flung village steeped in tribal customs. The show combines hilarious video footage from Akoch s recent trip to Sudan with fast-paced theatrical storytelling and musical interludes.

Audiences will be captivated by Akoch s natural charm and comic talent, as he encounters a suite of colourful characters portrayed by Trent McCarthy.

McCarthy s previous shows include Who is Abdul Smith? (Melbourne Fringe 2008), Turning Sudanese (MICF 2008) and Confessions of a Talkback Junkie (MICF 2007). He also appears in the quirky political satire, Mo the Plumber in this year s Comedy Festival, alongside Mohammed El-leissy.

Returning Sudanese is a show you won t forget, and the type of comedy we need to see more of in Melbourne.

Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD), a youth charity with the primary focus of changing lives through music, announced today its MMAD World Competition 2009. In an effort to motivate, encourage and empower ordinary people to become world changers, the MMAD World Competition has secured a new sponsor and now provides two categories for you to be involved.

Channel [V] has come on board as media partner of this initiative and will be helping to launch the competition with a new category MMAD [V] Clip where musicians can enter a film clip that aims to make a difference to the world. The winner will have their clip played on Channel [V].

MMAD Ambassador MC Blue from The Potbelleez said, "This is a chance for artists and people to give back in some way and make the world a better place while doing what they love - playing music. The great thing about this competition is it's open to all ages around the world so anyone, anywhere from any culture can have a go."

This annual competition will be launched at a music gig at MELT in Sydney's Kings Cross with guest artists Sally Singleton, Dominic Brook and The Cherry Pickers ( and the Potbelleez to be confirmed).

Dominic Brook, founder and director of MMAD agrees saying, "We hope that this competition will lead to more people being proactive in contributing to their world on either a small or large scale. There are many ways one can use music to fundraise for a worthy cause, offering music to soup kitchens for the homeless, delivering an important message through a song or music related idea, running a workshop or community event to help people, creating a film clip to address certain issues, or even busking with specific and unique twists to brighten the streets where they live. The sky's the limit."

So get moving, get MMAD! Round up some friends and brainstorm what MMAD way you can make a difference.

Enter the MMAD World Competition via two avenues:

1. A person or group who makes a difference in their community wins $2000 towards music equipment or towards their next positive community music initiative.
2. The MMAD [V] Clip where artists can enter a film clip that delivers a positive message will win 2 weeks airplay on Channel [V]. Entrants are asked to produce inspiring and creative ways to make a difference through music within their own communities, to their immediate environment, or in the lives of the less fortunate.

Dancehouse's Housemate Residency Program is supporting the development and presentation of the extraordinary new work of Gabrielle Nankivell.

This evocatively titled new work is her choreographic debut as a solo artist and an exciting entry to the Australian choreographic scene.

I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain is a performance that examines struggle as an inherent quality of being human. The audience is invited to experience intense physicality and haunting words framed by Benjamin Cisterne's (Bluebottle) design and a striking soundtrack by Luke Smiles.

Harnessing the imagination as a physical force, I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain is a visual poem for anyone who has taken the enchanting qualities of their broken world and built a fairytale as inspiration to survive.

Gabrielle Nankivell belongs to a generation of international artists that are creating work across multiple countries.

ACMI Cinemas presents in association with Sydney Film Festival: Focus on Girls 24/7.

From desperate housewives to rampaging teenage anarchists, 'the girls' are up front in these stylistically brazen films by women directors from the sixties and early seventies. The films brought together in Focus on Girls 24/7 are stylistically brazen, each signalling a unique creative vision behind the lens. The contradictory impulses of the modern woman are rendered on screen in bold, unfettered performances from the leading actresses. Seen collectively, these films raise questions about the attainability of personal and social freedom in an era when 'liberation' was the main prize. Seen apart, each film is an enduring classic from one of the most vital eras in the history of cinema.

Winner of the Silver Bear at the 1975 Berlin Film Festival, Stuart Cooper's original and hypnotic meditation on the machine of war is an astounding rediscovery for cineastes. Shot by legendary cinematographer John Alcott, Overlord seamlessly combines a fictionalised narrative of a British soldier's journey from basic training to the beaches of Normandy with startling documentary footage taken from the wider conflict. Stanley Kubrick said the only problem with Overlord was that it was 'an hour-and-half too short'. After seeing this remarkable filmmaking achievement, one would have to agree.

Russ Tamblyn (Riff in West Side Story and Dr Jacoby in Twin Peaks) is the diminutive Tom who takes a trip to the local village and is nabbed by two villains (one being Peter Sellers) who intend to make the most out of our innocent little hero.

The Force is strong with Eric (Sam Huntington), Linus (Chris Marquette), Hutch (Dan Fogler) and Windows (Jay Baruchel), Star Wars fans since childhood. On Halloween night 1998, six months out from the release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, they hatch a plan to drive cross-country (in Hutch's Millennium Falcon-style, Star Wars-detailed van) to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and see a rough cut of the film. Along the way, they recruit a fangirl, Zoe (Kristen Bell, TV's Veronica Mars) and score a hot tip from Harry Ain't It Cool News Knowles (Ethan Su plee, from My Name Is Earl) that leads them to a Deep Throat at a Star Trek convention in Vegas. Told with unflinching nerd pride, Kyle Newman's thoroughly good-natured paean to fans and fandom co-stars Seth Rogen and features cameos by Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Kevin Smith and William Shatner. 'Glories in its devotion to the pop culture phenomenon that is Star Wars . the definitive tribute to a generation of sci-fi nerd!' The Chicago Maroon. Opera Australia's 2009 Season at the Arts Centre opens on April 4, 2009 with a new production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, directed by David Freeman, and conducted by Jari Hmlinen. It features Andrew Goodwin, Sarah Crane, Daniel Sumegi, Andrew Moran, Lorina Gore and the upside-down antics of physical theatre company Legs on the Wall.

Brave Prince Tamino is on a quest for truth, beauty and love. Before he reaches journey's end he must find his way through a mysterious land, full of strange characters that will test his wits, his will and his strength of character. This is the enchanting world of The Magic Flute.

This daring production of Mozart's final work for the theatre was created for Opera Australia's 50th Anniversary season in 2006 and is a true collaboration between two radically different companies: Opera Australia brings international and Australian artists to the State Theatre stage while Legs on the Wall uses music, dance, acrobatics, circus tricks and aerial wizardry to turn buildings into vertical stages. This physical theatre company performs at festivals nationally and internationally and was last seen in Melbourne climbing the walls of the National Gallery of Victoria as part of the Commonwealth Games Festival in 2006.

Ruby Rabbit facelift!

Level 1 is being transformed into a changeable 6 cube panorama, effectively a 'virtual' interior where all surfaces and planes are covered by guest artists / designers on a regular basis.

This initial lunar theme feeds perfectly into the announcement of their new relationship with Future Entertainment. Future will host parties at Ruby rabbit every Friday and Saturday night starting on 3rd and 4th April. Future Entertainment has been responsible for bringing some of the largest global artists to Australia and their events regularly see up to 40,000 people gather at a single event in a safe and professional environment. Some of their most recent tours include artists such as The Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, N.E.R.D, Pharrell Williams, Basement Jaxx and Carl Cox.

In addition the launch weekend will also offer the opportunity to hang out in one of the newly finished ground floor spaces. The beloved hand screen printed Florence Broadhurst inspired signature wallpaper so synonymous with the venue will be replaced by a totally new look on the ground level, which will be split into three separate venues each with a completely individual identity

The first revealed ground floor new bar has been internally dubbed the 'Houndstooth Room'. This bar is draped from floor to ceiling in hand printed hounds tooth patterned linen. Think chocolates and caramel, yes brown is the new black again this year.

It's a more relaxed cocktail space, exuding a classic New York speak easy feel with personalised service from the one man cocktail bar, tended by an iconic who's who of Australian Hospitality, and has comfortable low riding lounges lining the walls. Both level 1 and De Nom patrons will be able to enjoy this new bar space.

"The world championships take place in Austria in July each year, and we're strategically better placed with a May event leading into the world champs.
Peter said a change of date will also enable the event to become part of Noosa's May Fiesta calendar, orchestrated by Tourism Noosa.
"The 2010 event will be the third Australian Body Art Carnivale, bringing together cutting-edge artists and designers from far and wide," he said.

The Carnivale is centred around body art in its many and varied forms - from the more readily seen art form of face painting right through to cutting-edge full body painting in the three categories of airbrush, sponge and brush, as well as special effects.

"The event provides a unique opportunity for Australia's top body artists and face painters to compete, and is a springboard for emerging body artists to hone their craft," he said.

"For members of the public, it's phenomenal to watch the human canvases take shape during the competitions," Peter said. "It's all about creative edge, originality, use of colour, and technical expertise."
