The funny people include British comedy legends The Goodies and Alexei Sayle, Sydney's top stars Merrick and Rosso and Akmal, dancer of the moment Fiona O'Loughlin, and 193 other acts and shows for a weekend of spectacular silliness.

World's Funniest Island will transform the former colonial prison and naval dockyard, utilising the unique buildings, parklands, tunnels, a spectacular big top and even a bomb shelter to deliver a laughquake of entertainment from mid-morning until midnight.

The festival will pack in everything from top comics, sketch shows, circus, cabaret and burlesque, to music comedy, the best Australian student revues and even crazy art classes.

Like the big music festivals, performers will be announced progressively. The local list includes Heath Franklin's Chopper, Tripod, Jimeoin, Anthony Ackroyd, Austen Tayshus, Scared Weird Little Guys, Wendy Harmer, Sleek Geeks (Adam Spencer and Dr Karl) and Claire Hooper.

Fresh from selling out London's Hammersmith Apollo, US Muslim comics Allah Made Me Funny (one African-American, one Indo-American and one Palestinian-American) will premiere on the island.

And, in a world exclusive, Pakistan's only English-speaking stand-up comic Sami Shah will make his first ever international appearance.

Specially cooked for Cockatoo Island, Bitchin' Kitchen matches chefs and comics in a hilarious cook off. Erotic Fan Fiction offers funny filth in literary form, while the world's only burlesque drawing class, Dr Sketchy's Anti Art Class, offers a relaxed hour of adults-only loopy life drawing. Comedy Festival, Comedy @ Trades

It used to be that celebrities were born of talent..or crime. But with the birth of reality TV, celebrity has become a lottery. Are you holding a winning ticket without realising it? Come to Deborah Frances-White's How Almost Anyone Can Become an Overnight Celebrity and let this engaging UK performer share with you her rigorous research on the secrets of celebrity and how she convinced London media that she was one.

From winning 'Deal Or No Deal' in an attempt to win back an ex-girlfriend, through encountering multiple flashers on a mountain in Spain, to accidentally punching a girl in the face (twice) in front of 50 people, Dave Bushell has done some stuff in his life. You would think that he'd have learnt some lessons from that; that there would be a moral at the end of his stories, but he hasn't, and there isn't, and in Let The Kid Go we find that things just don't work like that.

Who Is Priscilla Irving? It's the question on everyone's lips, so in this portable, almost entirely aural comedy experience Lou Sanz explores this perplexing question by trawling through the crap from her life. Now residing in the Bystander Bar.

10 years of comedy, 10 years of steady decline. In 10th Anniversary of Failure, Nick Caddaye revisits past shows about time traveling improvisers, the gold rush, a doomed German circus, a 108 year old drug addict and shows us what a decade of largely ignored comedy gets you.

It's back! With added faux-campfire! Storytellers' Club, the cult phenomenon of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival returns to Trades Hall in 2009. After 2008's successful debut, Storytellers' returns with more magical eves of bedtime stories and campfire tales. Each show features different comedians and musicians from all over the globe weaving tales to blow your mind and break your heart.

The Anarchist Guild Social Committee present A Fine Selection, a collection of some of Australia's finest young comics coming together to present a brand new extravaganza of sketch comedy goodness. AGSC present their final selection of pure, unalloyed mirth, carefully selected from the past year of their regular monthly Trades Hall show.

Combine the sheer, childlike absurdism of Buster Keaton with the deft physical intonation of Charlie Chaplin and you have Sam Wills: The Boy with Tape on His Face. This exciting one-man show from New Zealand has been attracting attention across the globe for the past four years, racking up armfuls of awards for 'Best Show', 'Best Show Concept' and a nomination for 'Best Newcomer' at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Alexis Dubus - A Bl**dy Brief History Of Swearing is one man's attempt to discover why a handful of words in the English language still have the power to shock, offend and amuse in equal measure. Sure there are plenty of shows containing swearing in Melbourne this year, but only one that goes into detail about our wonderful 4-lettered friends.

Lawrence Leung and Andrew McClelland are Time Ninjas. They've have stumbled upon time travel and now they're going forward to the past to make things better. Hopefully. The duo who asked you to join their Somewhat Secret Secret Society Show present a mind-bending comedy that will go down in history...or potentially destroy it. Time Ninjas has also just been nominated for the Squirrel Grip Critics Choice award in the Groggy Squirrel awards!

Exposed! The story of swimwear

Venue:National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour
Date:'2 July - 25 October 2009'
Time:9.30 am to 5 pm
Neck-to-knees, togs, budgie smugglers, sluggos, maillot... over the last century swimwear, like its name, has evolved... from a functional outfit to an often provocative fashion essential.

A new exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum will show how Australian designers and swimming stars have been central figures in the evolution of the modern swimsuit, helping to blur the boundaries between underwear and outerwear.

Exposed! The story of swimwear draws on the museum's extensive collection of historical swimwear to explore how the modern swimsuit changed bathing into swimming and helped redefine perceptions of the body.

As a nation of swimmers it's not surprising Australia played, and continues to play, such a key role in swimwear innovation and design.

Over the ensuing decades the modern swimsuit underwent an amazing transformation with Australian designers spearheading many of these developments.

Why is Round She Goes so popular?

- they only hold 3 to 4 markets per year -they'd rather do a few major events than lots of small ones and shoppers know now that it's worth coming for. We've had women fly in from interstate just for the market!
- they quality-check all our stallholder applications (applications outweigh stall spots)
- all women just love a bargain and Round She Goes has plenty of them
- and five hours (plus it's quicker and easier than selling clothes online). One stallholder for example made $2000 in one day and she put it toward a holiday to Europe!

Have you ever thought there were just too many coincidences for it to be a coincidence? Looking directly at modern Hollywood blockbusters, we may be able to see that the revolution is not only being televised, but designed through popular culture to condition us to the end of the world as we know it.

Hear Leonarder deconstruct Heath Ledger in The Dark Night, David Bowie in The Labyrinth and many more. Could 'they' be laughing at us every time we purchase a movie ticket? Be warned: you will never watch movies the same way again.

Comedy @ Trades

Booking:www.comedyattrades.com.au
Comedy @ Trades kicks off its 2009 season with eight hilarious reasons why inside the 150-year-old walls of Trades Hall should be your first stop for belly aching laughs this Comedy Festival.

The Birdman is a rare bird indeed, part comedian, part magical escape artist, The Birdman with his show 1 Line will thrill you with death defying lyrical puns, Houdiniesqe conundrums and an absolute shipload of rope.

The Colors are back! The Colors Interactive Comeback Show features the New York proto seminal outfit name checked by everyone from The Stones to The Yeah Yeah Yeahs returning after years in the musical wilderness to reap the musical legacy they helped sow.

Forget Ramsey, Oliver and Nigella, Danny McGinlay is the Food Dude, the master of the post pub cook up. At 3am, armed only with a knob of butter, a tin can and a used matchstick, McGinlay shines whilst others fall asleep in the neighbour s rose garden.

His name is Eric, one man on a lonely mission, The One Man Sketch Comedy Show. Much (well exactly) like the name suggests Eric cares not for large ensembles and supporting cast, just a bag full of honest to goodness sketch comedy that needs to be seen to be believed.

Suspicious minds? Phillip Escoffey in his show Six Impossible Things Before Dinner knows exactly what s on your mind. Master of the unexplained, Escoffey will make you question everything you ever thought about reading other people s thoughts.

Do you really know what your children are watching? The Soft Toy Mafia takes you on a journey to the seedy underbelly of toddler TV, a world of drugs, has been porn stars and bizarre love triangles, what chance have the children for innocence?

Who listens to the radio? Well may you ask, but the real question here is who is running our regional radio stations? On The Wireless big business has moved in to silence the rural airwaves, watch in awe as a bunch of small time radio types dig their heals in to avoid a life working at the local abattoir.

Got some fashion skeletons in your closet? A Stitch In Time The History Of Frocking Up is a sartorially satirical look at the crimes hidden in all of our wardrobes, from satin to sequins, lame to lam this show is a must for the fashion tragics amongst us all.

Want more? Then keep in mind Comedy @ Trades is doing its bit to help us all laugh in the face of the GFC with two free shows in the Bella Union Bar. Scott Edgar (Tripod) and The Universe will put some swing into your step whilst you refresh at the bar on Thursday evenings. On Wednesday to Friday have your inner biscuit revealed as Bert and Betty Bircher sort you out with a nice cuppa.

Burns Returns

The verbally volatile Perth born comedian is a certified UK superstar selling out theatres and amassing awards like Best Show at Edinburgh Fringe. He's also taken mushrooms on stage, kissed a goat on air, stormed off Live TV, gone shit smearing mad, and now he's back for One Night Only at Sydney Comedy Festival.
