The Great Contemporary Art Bubble

Venue:ABC2
Date:'Sunday, 18 October 2009 '
Time:8:30pm
This decade has seen the greatest rise in the value of art in the history of the world as contemporary art prices increased by 800% from 2003 until 2008.
The lustrous contemporary art bubble blew bigger and lasted longer than the global credit bubble, the property bubble and the oil bubble. On September 15, 2008, the day Lehmans collapsed bearing the worst financial news since 1929, Damien Hirst sold over 70 million pounds of his art at a Sotheby's auction that totalled 111 million pounds over two days.

Art critic, art lover and filmmaker Ben Lewis spent all of 2008 investigating this bubble. Everywhere he went, the art world told him the boom would last forever, fuelled by a new passion from the world's super rich. He saw it as a bubble akin to tulip fever and was filming when it burst in spectacular fashion.

Meanwhile, Bubbles is making a valiant effort to go straight and summons Det. Shakima Greggs (Sonja Sohn), requesting a couple of hundred dollars for clean sheets and new clothes. An irritable but sympathetic Greggs promises to help.

Laura and her husband Aled decided to go against early medical advice and the two baby girls named Faith and Hope were delivered by Caesarean section in late December 2008 in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Joined from the breastbone to navel the twins had separate hearts and doctors were cautiously optimistic, however, due to medical complications the doctors were forced to perform the separation of the girls earlier than they would have liked, and tragically neither Faith nor Hope survived.

This documentary follows the couple's heartbreaking story as it unfolds.

Otto Preminger Season: The Human Factor

Venue:ABC2
Date:'Saturday, 24 October 2009 '
Time:8:30pm
This compelling spy-thriller was the last film directed by Preminger and in making it he brilliantly chose Tom Stoppard to adapt Graham Greene's novel. The 'human factor', exemplified by Greene in the novel, was the heart of the matter for so many of Preminger's films.

Maurice Castle (Nicol Williamson) is a carefully organised and methodical lower level civil servant who happens to work for British Intelligence in the area of African affairs. He has a beautiful African wife (Iman), an adopted son, and a particularly English way of approaching his boring job. Everything is compartmentalised, ordered and devoid of passion.

This rather ordinary man is approaching the safe end of his career when he becomes the object of a security check, an event that irretrievably changes his life and reveals him to have been a rather reluctant double agent who somehow slipped into treason, not for money or out of conviction, but for reasons that tragically confuse private and public loyalties. He loses everything. Forced to defect to Russia, Castle finds it all quite absurd and devastating.

It is the largest free standing sculpture ever carved from a single block; an icon recognised around the globe. The Sphinx, a lion with the face of a mighty pharaoh, towers twenty metres high and stretches seventy metres long.

It is a silent witness to thousands of years of history. For over 4,500 years it has stood guard in front of the Giza Pyramids, yet it remains one of history's most enigmatic mysteries. Based in Cairo, top Egyptologist Dr Vassil Dobrev has spent over twenty years researching the Sphinx, and has a theory that proposes a completely new and previously unrecognised pharaoh as the builder of the Sphinx.

His name was Djedefre, and according to Dobrev's pioneering research, he was the true driving force behind some of the most remarkable structures in all of ancient Egypt. Yet to prove that this little-known king created this incredible monument, Dobrev must first crack a conundrum that has baffled Egyptologists for years - he must unmask the Sphinx to reveal the identity of its face. Yet the final proof lies in the intricacies of the design - does the Sphinx bear the face of the Djedefre's father, Khufu? To solve the mystery Dobrev forced his mind back 4,500 years to the time of the ancient Egyptians.

Proud matriarch of the Inkpen family, Elspeth, shares the manor with Naomi (her daughter), Naomi's legitimate daughter Fliss and Naomi's put-upon illegitimate daughter, Hilary.

All is not well in the Inkpen household. Fliss, spoiled and cruel, is resentful of the arrival of Hilary after many years of not knowing she existed. But while Fliss continues to live a pampered life, Hilary is treated as a kind of Cinderella figure - a servant to Elspeth, Naomi and Fliss. When Fliss is found dead in the garden, her head bashed in with a spade, she is the first of several people murdered in Midsomer-Deverell. Fliss's mother Naomi is the next to die mysteriously - are the murders somehow linked?
