YouTube is a video sharing website that lets users upload, view and share video clips about almost anything! The site was created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005 and it didn't take long for YouTube to become a huge success. In November the website was purchased by Google for US$1.65 billion. YouTube was launched on October 22, 2007 in Australia.
Keyword Discovery (http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/) predicts that over 3 million people searched YouTube in the last twelve months.
You don't have to be registered to YouTube to be able to watch videos and registered users are able to upload an unlimited number of videos for the general public to view.
Before YouTube was introduced there were not many ways to upload videos, because of the ease associated with YouTube it is possible for anyone to upload and others to watch in minutes!
YouTube has received some criticism in regards to users uploading copyrighted information such as television shows and concerts. YouTube has asked users to not upload any videos they did not create themselves and have organised a Copyright Tips page and the Community Guidelines page to help users determine if their video may infringe copyright.
Several countries have blocked access to YouTube, including China, Iran, Pakistan Turkey Morocco and Thailand due to religious and insulting cartoons and other controversy. Many schools throughout Australia and America have also blocked YouTube due to students being to upload bullying or fights in the school grounds. This does not always work as now mobile phones are able to record and upload videos to YouTube.
YouTube offers users to join groups titled 'Channel Types' which make their video viewing more individual. These different types are: Comedian, Director, Guru, Musician, Non-profit, Reporter, Politician and YouTube.
The front page has a popular section and the videos in these category are categorised by featured, rising videos, most discussed, most viewed, top favourite, most popular, most responded and top rated.
