This year marks the 150th anniversary of Design Hotels™ new member Hotel Bachmair Weissach, located in the Tegernsee valley of southern Bavaria. The celebrations will be twofold as 2012 also marks the completion of the extensive renovation on the traditional Bavarian inn. Korbinian Kohler, of famed Gmund fine paper-manufacturing family, purchased the property in 2010 with a clear vision in mind; to make the hotel into a premier social hub for locals and guests alike. As Kohler explains, 'Through Bachmair Weissach I have realised a lifelong dream, by recapturing the sense of endless time that I enjoyed in my youth. Winters as a boy were spent sitting by a warm fire for hours on end in one of the cozy inns at Tegernsee. Unfortunately moments like this are now in short supply and that is why I wanted to create a place in which guests could once again experience this kind of warmth and tranquility. I wanted this place to be modern in terms of design, a sort of cosmopolitan Tegernsee country club. Quite simply I wanted to create a place of happiness." The interiors are now defined by Kohler's own particular interpretation of contemporary Bavarian style, with a neutral colour palette and handcrafted furnishings sourced from the Tegernsee region. The culmination of Kohler's hard work is a luxurious hotel with all the cozy familiarity of a family-run hotel, which deftly combines contemporary elegance with a traditional charm.

Light-flooded rooms and suites
The 146 rooms and suites have been designed with great attention to detail. For Kohler one facet was of particular importance - guests should be able to wake up and know immediately that they are at Tegernsee. With this in mind, he put great emphasis on locally sourced materials and fabrics. The natural linen curtains are created from the same fabric as the traditional Tegernsee jackets and thus act as a symbol for the region. Champagne velvet appliqués adorn bedspreads, curtains and lampshades, providing a nod towards the more royal side of Tegernsee, famous for its palace that was once the summer residence of King Maximilian Joseph I. Even the impressive polished oak furniture has a story to tell: the hand crafted desks are reminiscent of the typical Bavarian farmhouse tables, the bedside tables of milking stools and the seating pays homage to traditional benches. The linen covered wardrobes with their curious handles are evocative of antique steamer trunks. Every piece of furniture has been custom-made exclusively for the hotel.

Modern touches with orange accents, black slate and French glass pearls
During his time at Gmund, Kohler developed a profound understanding of color, texture, form and aesthetics, which he used to stunning effect when creating the interiors of Hotel Bachmair Weissach. In keeping with his ideals of authenticity, original 19th century features, such as the breakfast pavilion's antique sideboard and restored oak floorboards at Gasthof zur Weissach, are indicative of the Tegernsee influence. Kohler's favorite orange shade has been worked into bold accents throughout the property; it features on lightshades, staff uniforms, fabric trims, mirrors, and even in the wardrobe interiors.

The crowning glory of the hotel is the newly opened Bachmair Lounge, which regularly plays host to jazz evenings and DJ sets and is already an evening hub amongst locals. With an intoxicating blend of past and present the lounge is the embodiment of Kohler's modern take on traditional design. The wood clad walls and ceiling hark back to typical Bavarian design, seamlessly put together with a sleek black slate fireplace and bar studded with French glass pearls. Certainly worth a look is the rustic wooden flooring, the timber for which was sourced from a converted Russian summerhouse. The round bar tables fashioned from 7cm thick slabs of whole tree trunks are another highlight. French bistro tables provided the inspiration for the metal table frames and the velvet upholstered chairs would not look out of place in a Parisian café.

Bavarian cuisine with a contemporary twist
Executive chef Frank Mollenhauer is on hand to tempt guests with his modern interpretation of Bavarian cuisine at Gasthof zur Weissach and its five -Stuben' - cosy parlour rooms. The tempting menu offers dishes such as oven roasted duck with apple mousse, chestnuts and potato dumplings and prune stuffed quail with creamy risotto and chestnut ravioli. There's also the newly opened Kreuther Fondue Stube, which serves Swiss classics such as cheese, fish and meat fondue from November to March.

Time to reflect at the Spa
At the 700m² Bachmair Spa, reflection and peace are the order of the day. With an indoor pool, Finnish sauna, tepidarium, ice grotto, Oriental steam bath and a specialist Alpine hay bath, it is the ideal place to unwind. Hotel Bachmair Weissach is situated in Weissach, Rottach Egern on the shores of Lake Tegernsee, approximately 50km from Munich International Airport.
