The Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) is often referred to as an ensemble of soloists. In a group of its size, there is nowhere to hide and this individuality is in part what makes them so unique. Few orchestras in the world are more respected for their strength of soloist talent. The ACO is pleased to shine a light on three extraordinary musicians in ACO Soloists touring to Wollongong, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane this autumn from 5-19 May.
Taking centre stage and directing the Orchestra will be Principal Violin Satu Vänskä, alongside Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve and Violinist Glenn Christensen. Created by Vänskä, this dynamic but diverse program is a special opportunity to see these masterful musicians move into the foreground to demonstrate their electrifying musicianship and push technical capabilities to new heights.
Vänskä takes on the devilishly dazzling Harmonic Labyrinth by Locatelli. This violin concerto is rarely performed and makes its ACO debut. Arguably this is its first performance by a professional Australian orchestra. The manuscript for this concerto bears the inscription 'facilis aditus, difficilis exitus" – easy to enter, difficult to exit and sparks will fly as Satu and her 1728 Stradivarius take on this monumental and thrilling piece.
