ACMI presents an exclusive limited season of Anna Rose Holmer's internationally acclaimed feature debut The Fits (2015), an atypical coming of age tale with a mysterious twist, set as a group of young women train to defend their reigning title in the fierce dance battle world. Following its recent local festival debut, ACMI screens The Fits in its first and only Melbourne cinema season for a limited run from 18 June to 10 July.
The film portrays the tenacious young -Lionesses', an all-female dance battle troupe, through the eyes of Toni, a tomboy played by nine-year-old newcomer Royalty Hightower, as she navigates more than just the transition from pull-ups to kick-steps. Each day after school Toni (Hightower) heads to the local community centre where she works out in the boxing gym that her older brother manages. Toni slowly gravitates towards the power and confidence of the -Lionesses', who practise on the other side of the gymnasium doors. But as she veers evermore into their foreign, primal world of adolescence, she must navigate this unknown land on her own terms while confronted with a spate of mysterious behaviour.
