Alexandra On My Way Interview

Alexandra On My Way Interview

Sydney-based up and coming RnB pop singer/songwriter Alexandra, who released her debut single 'Valuable', on Friday 17th April, is getting ready to release her first EP 'On My Way', on Monday 27th April 2020. 'On My Way' features eight brand new tracks written by Alexandra, collaborating with 318TAE, SLICK, SOLO OTTO, LA. RIICA, 3OHERTZBEATS, DYSTINKT BEATS and PANDORA NIGHTZ to produce the EP.

Each track on 'On My Way' captures the levels, limitations and lengths of sanity when it comes to love, posing the question many of us have been forced to face; "Have we lost our minds?". With powerful lyrics written by Alexandra, she provides us with moments of comfort and unity in times where we have been let down by love and left broken down.

At the time of the release of her debut single 'Valuable', Alexandra said, "I really hope one day I can sell out stadiums like Beyoncé, singing all my songs with the crowd, with killer choreography, outfits and visuals. My dream is for my music to make people feel a little bit better in times like we are in now." This enthralling performer is one you're going to want to keep an eye on.

Interview with Alexandra

Question: How would you describe your music?

Alexandra : Mainly R&B, but sprinkled with a bit of pop, soul and hip-hop. These were the genres that I grew up listening to. I adore them all so much. Thematically, it's honest, vulnerable, transparent and empowering.

Question: Can you tell us about On My Way?

Alexandra : On My Way has been a long time coming. I started this project 18 months ago, and had written over 20 songs for it. The essence of it is to convey my journey of being at the peak in a joyful and thrilling relationship, ending that relationship, and then subsequently trying to reassure my direction and purpose. There was never any doubt, but I ultimately become even more certain in what I'm doing and where I'm headed.

Question: What inspired your debut single Valuable?

Alexandra : Some of it was inspired by personal experience, but the bulk of it was from observing how my girlfriends, and girls in general for that matter, are treated in their relationships. I see these beautiful, intelligent and driven women, with the world to offer, be so unappreciated, naturally prompting them to think so little of themselves and adopt such a distorted self-perception. I wanted Valuable to be a wakeup call for these girls to realise their worth and value.

Question: How does it feel to release your first album?

Alexandra : It definitely feels surreal, but long overdue. I've been singing and performing since I was 4 years old, so releasing this project naturally feels like the next step. That being said, on release day I blasted it on the speakers and my whole family danced, and that was such a "pinch me" moment. I mean, that's my voice they're listening to!

Question: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Alexandra : Still singing and performing, and I hope to be based in LA. That's the dream. I hope to have secured a record deal with a major label, release a couple of albums, and go touring around the world. I also love acting, so maybe star in a film or two. And finally, I know this is extremely ambitious, but I hope to win a Grammy.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Alexandra : Beyoncé. That woman, in my opinion, is the greatest performer and artist of all time. She is completely un-toppable. So, to have a legend like her even be vaguely aware of who I am and attend one of my shows would just be… I don't even have the words to articulate how I would feel.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Alexandra : I always just had this innate desire to sing and perform. I can't really pinpoint what inspired that ambition. But as I grew up and thought more extensively about how I was going to achieve success in the industry, I turn to, again, Beyoncé. Everything about her, down to her music, vocal abilities, work ethic, vision, performances and artistry, is inspiring. That's what I aim to do.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Alexandra : It comes as no surprise, but Beyoncé. Always Beyoncé. I would learn so much from her. She is a master.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Alexandra : Definitely not. I've had moments where I need to take a timeout because things are just not working, but never have I contemplated giving up. I was born to do this. I feel allergic to even considering doing something else.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Alexandra : Wake up, eat breakfast, then straight to writing or recording. I just chain myself to my laptop or notepad. I take breaks by working out or studying for university if need be. I always have an aim for each day, whether that be finishing writing a song or record up to a certain point. I never go to sleep until it's done.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Alexandra : Just being able to sing and make music. Nothing makes me happier. And then being able to share that with people. Receiving feedback from someone telling me they danced, related or felt inspired honestly gratifies me in ways I can't express.

Question: What's next, for you?

Alexandra : I've already begun my next project. I'm working with a very talented and close of friend of mine who I think will be the next Max Martin. She is honestly insane in her skill and knowledge. I'm also in touch with American-based music producers that are at the top of the game. This next project is going to be even more R&B and old school. Just bringing back soul, vocal prowess, and going back to the roots of R&B.
