Amigos Mexican Restaurants
The Amigos' extensive menu provides classic Mexican food with a modern twist. The food is served quite fast and every single meal is huge, you will not go home hungry! Unlike other Mexican restaurants, the food was of good quality and I felt as if it was actually cooked to order. The food tasted fresh and you could tell that the cheese had just been grated. The smell of the cooking food drifts through the open kitchen to the restaurant and onto the street and if you're lucky enough to have your seats in full view of the kitchen, you will see the enticing flames, as the food is cooked.
The atmosphere of the Amigos restaurant is great, the staff are knowledgeable of the menu and extremely friendly; whilst the front of house manager greeted customers like he has known them for years.
The Amigos restaurant is quite small, so it can be noisy. On a warmer night, you should book a table outside, where you can watch what goes on at the Chapel street location, under the heaters.
Head chef, Elias has a passion for food and claims he has the best 'Mexican inspired' food in Australia. Elias completed his chef apprentice at the Windsor Hotel, where he cooked mainly French and Italian dishes. Whilst completing his apprentice he worked another job, to accomplish his goal, of owning his own Italian restaurant, which he fulfilled by the age of 21.
Elias wanted to use his food knowledge to develop a 'Mexican inspired' menu; his main aim was to stay clear of Tex-Mex. Elias' background guaranteed he placed his own French and Italian spin on the Amigos' menu, providing an excellent standard of food.
Have one of the 200+ cocktails, margaritas or other alcoholic drinks Amigos has to offer to ignite your taste buds. If you are a tequila fan, you'll be happy to know that the Amigos restaurants have the biggest selection of tequila in Australia.
If you don't know what drink to begin with, try the Passionfruit cocktail, the sugar rim tops off a perfect drink. If you have room for another cocktail, try the specialty Fig Spice which is Gran Centenario Reposado and Tuaca with smashed caramel figs and fresh lime; the best part is the cinnamon and sugar rim. If you like sweeter drinks, the Pink Panther is for you; Herradura Silver and Pama Pomegranate Liqueur with pineapple, fresh lime and grenadine - shaken and served martini style!
At Amigos you will find all the usual Mexican dishes; enchiladas, fajitas quesadillas, tacos, nachos, salads and paellas. I'm not a fan of chili or spicy foods and at Amigos' this didn't matter.
For starters think about sharing taquito or quesadillas, both are deliciously baked and definitely worth a try.
A Chimi Changa is the meal for a meat loving man; it is a huge beef wrapped tortilla topped with cheese and baked in the oven. If you want something different, try the seafood Signature Fajitas, a delicious dish with onion, mushroom, capsicum and garlic in a French Mustard Sauce, served on a hot sizzling plate; with lettuce, guacamole, rice and tortillas for you to make your own fajitas! If it was up to me, I'd have fajitas every time I went; it is worth paying the extra to share!
A regular Amigos' customer suggested that new comers try the nachos with chicken, not only are they cheesy they are tasty too!
Each dessert is truly sensational, but big; I would suggest getting one and sharing! The Sizzling Chocolate Brownie smells as great as it tastes; the brownie and ice-cream is brought out on a sizzling plate where the homemade Kahlua chocolate sauce is drizzled over the top. Yum! I feel like one right now... I also recommend you try the Churros, there is definitely enough to share around. Churros are Spanish donuts, served with dipping chocolate.
Amgios was established in 1981 and after the success of the Chapel Street location Amigos opened a further two locations in Melbourne, one on Lygon Street and the other on Acland Street. Keep your eye out for an Amigos store close to you, as the Amigos restaurants are expanding.
The restaurants can be quite busy, if you'd like to eat your meal in peace opt for the free home delivery service.
The Chapel street location of Amigos is open until 2am and has been since 1995, because of its great location. Who doesn't want to grab a taco or burrito before heading home for the night?
Honestly I cannot wait to go back to Amgios; where the nachos are cheesy, the food is fresh, well-presented and not over garnished and they have a delicious cocktail menu; what more could you ask for?
