Anna Smyrk returns with feisty new single 'I Don't Want to Meet Your Mother'
+ performing at Newstead and Port Fairy Folk Festivals

+ new distribution with MGM

Australian indie-pop bombshell Anna Smyrk is back with a feisty new single 'I Don't Want to Meet Your Mother' and the first new music since the celebrated release of The Hour Between Us EP in 2021, further highlighting her trademark vulnerable lyrics with explosive arrangements and ear-wormy hooks. To celebrate, this summer will see Anna and her all star-band of Alex Burkoy (Tinpan Orange), Holly Thomas (Quivers, Husky, Freya Josephine Hollick) and Loz Irwin Ray (Belly Savalas) gracing stages at the Woodford Folk Festival, Newstead Folk Festival, and Port Fairy Folk Festival alongside a couple of Victorian headline shows.

Out now via MGM, 'I Don't Want to Meet Your Mother' was recorded in Nashville with producers Jake Finch and Collin Pastore (Lucy Dacus) and is the perfect summer indie-pop anthem about the push/pull of young love and freedom and letting go, with the right amount of tongue-in-cheek from the title to the healthy dose of sass throughout the track. With catchy pop melodies and upbeat guitar riffs, 'I Don't Want to Meet Your Mother' puts the positive into a brief love "This is fast love, It's not last love, And we'll spend our whole lives not recovering."

"I wrote this song thinking back to my first relationships," says Anna. "I grew up in a small town but I had all these big dreams. I didn't want to get tied down to any one person or place. So I always kept a wall up, I didn't want to accidentally find myself in too deep to get out."

"There's a part in this song where me and the producers are all just shouting 'NO!" at the top of our lungs, like a bunch of cranky toddlers. It was probably my favourite studio moment, even though I kind of lost my voice after that."

Anna Smyrk did not slow down during the global pandemic. She made the most of her downtime from live shows with the release of a collection of long-distance love songs, cementing her reputation as "a significant songwriter with an exceptional voice" (UK website Backseat Mafia). Singles from the EP were added to rotation on Double J and MTV and described as 'soul-stirring' by Triple J.

Picking up the pace again on the live front in 2022, the last 12 months have been massive for Anna, touring North America and Europe, playing official showcases at NXNE (Canada), Folk Alliance International (USA) and Live at Heart (Sweden) and recording a follow-up EP in Nashville with award-winning producers Jake Finch and Collin Pastore (Lucy Dacus), scheduled to be released in the first half of 2023.

Having honed her songwriting craft with some of Australia's finest songwriters and artists including Ainslie Wills and Alice Ivy, 'I Don't Want to Meet Your Mother' is a lively lighthearted start to a year of new music from the evolving sounds of Anna Smyrk.
