Dr Girl/Dr Dejour Q&A

Dr Girl/Dr Dejour Q&A
Dear Dr Dejour,

Hi, I'm almost 13 and I have a bit of a body problem. My thighs have always been big and I've always complained but this time I'm sick of trying to hide them. All my friends are skinny and I feel really embarrassed. I'm not big above my waist but for my legs it's another story. I'm like different sizes for my top and bottom. It sucks! Can you please suggest some exercises or something that will help? Am I just being paranoid? Please I'd really like to feel good about myself.

Signed,
Big Thighs

Dear Miss BT,

Your last line is wonderful and the key to the universe, and you will feel good about yourself, as you are mature at 13 beyond your years.

The old body shape thing eh? Basically you are growing your body, your bones, your mind and heart and soul at the moment and to become preoccupied with weight or shape at this stage would be very counter-productive.

I cannot advise anything other than doing what you love, pursuing interests and developing in every way. Most real people are different sizes (according to those people in shops who decide). You might note a similar body shape in other women in your family and celebrate your heritage. To lose weight overall would be not good for the aforementioned developments that adolescence is crucial for (especially bone mass and mind), and would not alter the ratio of your top to bottom size (i.e. you would get too skinny up top).

Go girl, you're OK.

Regards,

Dr Dejour
