Dear Doctor

Hi Dr Kate,

Is it true that you can get STD's from oral sex? If so, how can you avoid it? I've noticed guys HATE the suggestion of wearing a condom when you're giving to them, and seem to think it's completely pointless unless they are "uncovered"!

Signed Uncertain

Dear Uncertain,

It is true that you can rarely pick up a STD from oral sex. What is most important to know is that it is most common when you have an "active lesion". This means that if someone has a STD including genital herpes, or oral herpes (or coldsores) that these can be transmitted to the other person during oral sex. Hence it is during these situations that it is most important to use condoms, wait for the herpes or coldsores to heal completely, or treat the STD.
