Broads Stay Connected Tour

Melbourne queens of indie-noir, Broads, will release their highly anticipated album 'Stay Connected' on Friday August 23. Kelly Day and Jane Hendry (Broads) will also be hitting the road for a national tour this August through to October.

'Stay Connected' is the sophomore album from Broads. Self produced, Broads have pushed their sound from their acoustic roots into a wider spectrum of colour - with hints at 60s pop, 70s folk, a little 80s new wave. Tying the album together is the duo's disarming vocals and lyricism, defying any obvious comparisons.

Recorded at Newmarket Studios with Callum Barter (British India, Courtney Barnett, Big Scary, with subsequent recordings and final mixing by Nick Batterham (The Earthmen, Cordrazine). The eleven songs were all written and produced by Kelly, who also performed many of the instrumental parts on the album. Completing the sound is the band's familiar crew - Matt Dixon (Wallflower, Emilee South band), Tristan Courtney (Blackchords, The Tiger & Me) and Ben Wiesner (The Audreys), with guest guitarist Tim Baker (Big Smoke).

"…we live in a world which is obsessed with the importance of connection, and yet so often seems incapable of doing so in any real sense. We experience so much of the world now through globalised platforms that it seemed fitting to give the album a title which could be the slogan of a media platform or utility." Kelly states.

Broads wanted each song not to feel like a definitive statement or angry assertion, but just one perspective of a complex subject. First single 'Mirror' critiques an obsession with phones and social media. 'Mushies' on the other hand offers an alternative view, of a global network creating a nourishing and comforting space.

The album delves into a range of connective ideas - family, romance, even dips its toe into existentialism with 'Bones' and 'No Love Required', for those moments when all quests for connection seem impossible. Despite the darker tones to some tracks, 'Stay Connected' is a record that will ultimately leave you feeling positive.

The focus single from the record 'Velvet Paradise' (listen here) is an understated 60s pop sounding track that retells a late night conversation on a bus. "…it's a nostalgic look back at a time before I started to fear being on my own at night, when all I felt was curiosity and even the darkest life stories seemed to offer some sort of hope" says Kelly. Its background melodies will have you feeling dreamy and it's a track you'll just want to keep on spinning.

'Stay Connected' is a sophisticated follow up to their successful 2017 debut, 'Vacancy', which was described by The Music as 'a mellifluous collection of songs utterly drenched in enticing melodies and harmonies... a simply gorgeous, often haunting, always sublime inaugural full-length outing'. With this second album, Broads have stretched their horizons, introducing new sounds and sensibilities, while maintaining that unique Broads voice – two women side by side, exploring the depths of their experiences.

Broads will be hitting the road for a national tour this August through to October, where fans will be treated to a slew of intimate shows, some with full band and some in original duo format, but each show seeking the same thing: connection.
