Job Title Independent Record label Director and music producer/engineer
Job Description My job involves finding talent to writing songs, negotiating deals, and producing and or mixing artists' songs.
Hours (per week) 50 to 60 hours on average. Some weeks I will put in over 100 hours of work.
What was your first job? My first paying engineer job was recording vocals for country artist Johnny Chester (ask your grand parents!)
What inspired you to choose this particular career? For me, a love of music really hit me at the age of 14/15 and since then, that is all I have ever wanted to do.
What qualifications are needed to work in this field? None really. It just comes down to hard work. You have to have some technical abilities with the equipment, but they can be self-taught. The main thing is you just need a good ear for music and love what you are doing.
What is the best aspect about your job? The best aspect about my job is watching people enjoying music that I had a hand in making.
What are the worst aspects? Definitely the long hours which can keep you apart from the one you love and the rude people of the music business.
How many years' experience do you have in this field? I have been working in this capacity for the last six years.
Are there many employment opportunities? There are very few opportunities so you have to make your own a lot of the time. You also have to have a lot of persistence and patience.
