There may be no predicting the future, but one thing is for sure - Cass Hopetoun's new single 'Fortune Teller' is set to light the scene on fire. It's spooky, sexy and certain to worm its way into your head. 'Fortune Teller' follows on from 'Typical Bride', Hopetoun's recent #1 hit on The Music Network's Country Hot 50 and AMRAP Regional airplay charts. It continues a rich run of form for Hopetoun, whose debut single 'Shots' spent 17 weeks in The Music Network's Country Hot 50 airplay charts, peaking at #4.
'Fortune Teller' was produced by Matt Fell and recorded at his Love Hz Studios in Sydney. It was inspired by a 2019 trip to New Orleans. "I went to a fortune teller," recalls Hopetoun, "and just knew I had to write about one. I wanted to capture the New Orleans vibe – all those jazzy and mysterious flavours that the streets of the French Quarter have to offer. The song evolved into being about people who they think they know what's best for you. This is me telling them to mind their own business."
The track is complemented by a stunning video produced by Tribal Apes Productions and directed by Bruce Dawson, the winning team behind both of Hopetoun's previous videos. "I wanted to do something different with this video and add choreography into the mix. It was important that the choreography captured the essence of the song - that moody, jazzy almost theatre-esque vibe. We set the video in a rehearsal studio at Opera Australia's Sydney headquarters. Bruce and his team put a lot of effort into the lighting and captured the mood perfectly. I'm so happy that what we saw in our heads has to come to life in the video."
The video for 'Fortune Teller' has a lot to live up to given Hopetoun's first two visual offerings, which showcased her NIDA training and were added to full rotation on CMC & CMT respectively. The video for 'Shots' caught the attention of Amber Lawrence, who enthused "I was stopped in my tracks by the catchy song and high-quality video. What a great new artist – she's full of originality and drive and I look forward to hearing future releases."
'Fortune Teller' coincides with Hopetoun's next chapter – performing live. On November 20 she'll open for Shane Nicholson at Gosford's Laycock Theatre - presented by 'Great Southern Nights' - and has been confirmed to open for The Wolfe Brothers in Sydney early next year. Further touring and festival appearances are to be announced.
In March this year The Music Network lauded Hopetoun as "one to watch" in 2020. The release of 'Fortune Teller' confirms her as an artist of substance and great promise. Singer, songwriter, emissary of country sass - with a clear vision of where she's heading. No crystal ball required.
