Cassie Davis

Hailing from Perth, Cassie Davis is one of the new breed of young artists who isn't just a writer and singer, but a multi-instrumentalist and a studio-savvy producer. She recorded her first songs at 12 and by the time she was 20 she knew her way around a production studio and was familiar with every aspect of writing and producing songs.

Her first song, "Like It Loud" is from Cassie's forthcoming album, "Differently" which has introduced Cassie to Australia. Self-written and produced, it's a song bubbling with enthusiasm and brimming with genre-hopping confidence. Set against a backdrop which integrates all Cassie's musical loves - pop, rock, punk, ska, gospel and hip hop - her voice carries a depth and maturity.

Having spent much of the last few years working between studios and stages in the US and Australia, already Cassie has garnered a fan base amongst some of the American music industry's most illustrious - and hot - names. After hearing some of her songs in the hands of Printz Board (Black Eyed Peas musical director) singer Fergie picked up the phone and called Cassie to offer her support and encouragement. Fergie even admitted one of Cassie's ballads had made her cry.

Then there's uber-producer Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Beyonce) who has been generous with advice and taking Cassie under his wing. Songwriter and producer Wayne Wilkins (Beyonce, Kylie, Natasha Bedingfield, Pink) is also in Cassie's corner and has already brought her in to work on a number of writing and production projects. Both producers have urged Cassie to continue following the unique musical path she has begun to forge for herself.

Cassie Davis is a Sony Ambassador and has been lucky enough to be provided with a number of products, ranging from Handycam camcorders to a VAIO notebook so that she can capture and post her latest news effortlessly for her fans, friends and family. Cassie has an increasing fan base due to her inspiring music and her constant communication with her fans, providing them with important news when she is at home and on tour.

Cassie has a talent and an effortless edge that ensures her success; all of her songs mimic her bubbly attitude and love for music. Like It Loud and Differently are both examples of the exciting and enjoyable music Cassie produces.

Interview with Cassie Davis

How do you communicate with your fans?

Cassie Davis: Mostly through social networking Twitter, Facebook and MySpace etc. I have a pink VAIO notebook that is great for keeping connected with my fans.

Do you think your constant communication with fans has helped with your music success?

Cassie Davis: I think if people feel connected to something then they are going to support you, so hopefully this has been the case with my music.

Do you use the same products to connect with your family and friends?

Cassie Davis: Yes, it's great being able to take photos with my Cyber-shot digital camera or shoot video and share things with my family no matter where I am in the world.

What do you think the positives are in regards to social media?

Cassie Davis: I think the positives of social media is that it has made the world a lot smaller and you can easily stay in contact with people from all over the world - the downsides would be that sometimes this can replace real contact with people as its very easy to send a message instead of meet up for a coffee.

Do you think online social networking sites are just for Gen Y?

Cassie Davis: No not at all I think that they are probably more popular with Gen Y because we have grown up with them but I there are also members of family that are from different generations all using the same sites I do.

What is your favourite technology product at the moment?

Cassie Davis: My favourite technology product at the moment would probably be my Full HD Handycam camcorder, I love watching back my journey this year, you forget how much has happened as how much has been achieved.

How did it feel to hear your songs played all over the airwaves?

Cassie Davis: It was so surreal, it was nearly a year ago to the day it was a couple of days after Christmas last year and my whole family was around as we listened back to the interview - I screamed I was so excited.

Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Cassie Davis: Not really, I have been working in the industry for a while behind the scenes and I always knew that it was very competitive and hard work but I love it and can't imagine myself working in another industry.

Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Cassie Davis: Yes I love to write - I write not only for myself but also for other people. When I am writing for myself it is very much autobiographical and it will be about something that I have experienced personally. When I am writing for another artist I am usually very much following a brief and creating something that suits the artist and their brand.

What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Cassie Davis: I'm really loving Owl City at the moment, they are great. I listen to a lot of obscure artists also, Brenda Fassie is my absolute favourite, and she is a South African artist and has the most amazing voice.

What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Cassie Davis: All of the above - I have another couple of songs to come from the "Differently" album - I will be touring with Kelly Clarkson in April 2010 and I am starting to work on a follow up album also its very much just ideas at the moment. I am really excited about creating something new for myself as well as other artists also.

Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Cassie Davis: Oh my goodness - absolutely. There have been so many ups and downs as is the nature with any areas of the entertainment industry but you just have to keep going and pushing forward.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Cassie Davis: That is like asking me to pick between my children - I love them both I really do love the creative process of making a record but I also enjoy getting out on stage and hearing people singing along with me that is also an amazing feeling.

What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Cassie Davis: I just loved creating music and have always had a passion for it so my sister and I decided to make a business out of it and start my own label.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Cassie Davis: I think the biggest challenge you face is people saying no - you have to realise that not everybody is going to love what you do but there are people that will. Until you find the opportunity that opens the door keep, getting better at what you do and be proactive, you can't just sit back and wait for someone to "discover" you, get out and get in peoples faces so they have no excuse but to notice you. You also need a great team around you that believe in you and will fight for you once you have the material ready to put out there.

What's a typical day like?

Cassie Davis: I don't really have a typical day. They can vary so dramatically depending on what is the focus at any given point - if I am writing then I am in the studio for 12 or so hour a day or if I am out promoting a record then I have interviews and appearances with radio, tv and other media as well as performances and meetings about upcoming projects.

What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?

Cassie Davis: My favourite part would be having the music that I have created heard by other people.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Cassie Davis: There are so many great people that I would love to work with and I have been fortunate enough to work with some great artists already - I'm open to working with anyone that I connect with musically.
