Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre Equity Program

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre announce today a new Equity Program aimed at making art and culture accessible to people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and circumstances by identifying specific CPAC events and offering them for free.

The first two events to be featured as a part of CPAC's Equity Program are HART (16 May), Ian Michael's harrowing recollection of the Stolen Generations and a morning with  Christine Anu – In Conversation and In Song (10 Jul).

"Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is committed to a philosophy that sees arts and culture enriching the lives of all of our community. We want artistic events to be accessible to everyone so we're very proud to be introducing our Equity Program and hope that it helps the community to engage with the incredible arts and culture events we present here throughout the year," said CPAC Director Craig Donarski.

"What better way to kick off our equity program than with these two stunning events. Ian Michael's HART is a quietly devastating performance that utilises testimonials from the Stolen Generations alongside his own story in a powerful piece of verbatim theatre. Then we bring Australia's much adored national treasure Christine Anu to the centre for a morning where she will share stories from her life and perform some of her greatest hits," he said.

In its first NSW performance, HART examines the difficult history of the Stolen Generations from the perspectives of four Noongar men spanning three generations – including performer and Noongar man Ian Michael, who won the Melbourne Fringe Best Emerging Indigenous Artist award for HART. Using testimonials from the Stolen Generations, Michael invites audiences to listen in on the silenced stories of his country.

In Christine Anu – In Conversation and In Song, the beloved singer will perform a selection of songs from her acclaimed music career, including songs from the Torres Strait Islands, Sunshine on a Rainy Day and My Island Home. Not only will Christine sing up a storm, but on this special occasion, she'll also speak about her life and career, her advocacy work and the importance of Indigenous languages in cultural identity.
