Choosing the Right Career

It can often be tough to decide exactly what career path you'd like to take, it is important to make the right choice and this piece can help guide you to choosing the right job for you.

It is important to take into consideration your passion, expertise and knowledge when choosing a job. Take an hour to think about your talents (what you are naturally good at) and look at careers that include this aspect whilst thinking about how you can implement skills that you have learnt into your future career. Most importantly think about your personality: Do you like dealing with people? Would you prefer a physical career or are you happy sitting at a desk? Do you like working on the computer or are you better suited to working with tools? Do you want to travel for work? What types of hours would you like to work (days or nights)?

If you have absolutely no idea what you'd like to do, there are many career test online that may guide you to understanding what is important in your career whilst also showing you want you enjoy doing most.

Whilst education can play an important role in securing a job, your skills will need to match the position. Research will allow you to evaluate your skills against the skills needed for your chosen workplace, it is important to take note of all your experiences including volunteering, general life experience and travel; include these and your accomplishments on your resume.

Once you have a short list of areas that are suited to your interests and skills, take time to thoroughly research the field of different occupations – not just online, but talk to people who are already working in the industry for an idea about positions, salaries, daily tasks and the skills needed to excel. Through networking you may be able to secure on-the-job experience (paid or unpaid) that will allow you to see if that is a work environment you can see yourself working in, in the future.
