Chymes Voodoo Doll
Continuing her run of bright, otherworldly releases across 2024, today Australian alternative pop artist Chymes is following up "Sweet" and "UFO" with new single "Voodoo Doll", and announces her second EP Alien will be out November 8 via Nettwerk.
An expert in mixing and matching genres, textures, and themes in her music, Chymes has never been afraid to try something new. Where her 2023 EP Game Over leant into the edgy, dark side of her unique brand of pop songcrafting, after a gruelling few years of write-release-repeat, Chymes took a breath and decided to change it up. Instead of putting productivity at the fore, she chose to spotlight joy.
The result – a sprawling, intergalactic hyper-pop exploration into the self. Unbound by deadlines or expectations, on her forthcoming EP Alien, Chymes was able to wholeheartedly embrace her potential as a songwriter and performer - and do it with an undeniable sense of freedom and play, , embracing her oddities and differences and presenting as unabashedly Chymes.
Of the EP's title and overarching theme, Chymes says, "My whole life I've always felt very odd. I couldn't ever quite put my finger on it. I didn't quite fit in at school growing up. I always felt that I stuck out in an awkward way. That definitely carried on into my adulthood. But last year… I was just like, 'f**k it'. I'm going to embrace it and make some music about it."
Chymes kickstarted this new chapter earlier in the year with "UFO", an unexpected delight of hyper pop, delicious sonic bites, and expertly written hooks, breaking away from the edgy, dark sound of her debut EP, it was immediately clear that Chymes was ready to embrace the quirks and eccentricities that make her stand out. Next up "Sweet" – with its playful, quirky energy – turned the sugar-dial up, before Chymes teamed up with K-Pop artist YOUHA on a sparkling rework of her track, called "UFO (Extraterrestrial Version)".

New single "Voodoo Doll" is the closest listeners will get to the previous Chymes chapter. It proved the most challenging track to get just right, as Chymes says: "When we wrote the melody, and put together the bare-bones production, it came together so fast. But when it came time to finish the track, we weren't sure which way to go. We wanted to pay homage to previous Chymes tracks – the dark pop stuff – but didn't want to go too far into that realm. We didn't want to get lost in an older Chymes vibe.
"Lyrically, the song is about that feeling when you've fallen for someone so quick and you have no idea how, but you're loving every moment of it. It's saying, 'what did you do to me?'…Writing stories like this are so fun for me, because I get to go into a character and create the entire world."
In the end, "Voodoo Doll" hit just the right balance of classic Chymes and everything that's coming next.
