Interview with DJ Krazy Kon

DJ Krazy Kon is Australia's very own International Greek DJ/Producer!

DJ Krazy Kon is a living legend in the world of Greek music. As a DJ and producer, his work is known around Australia and overseas, having headlined Greek festivals, club events and shows both nationally and internationally. His name is synonymous with playing, producing and promoting Greek Music and events and has been at the forefront of the Greek entertainment industry in this country for 15 years. He is recognised by many today as the most successful and influential Greek-Australian music artist of our time.

From his ideology and creation has spanned an iconic 'Greece' CD series which consists of an annual must have CD. He has now become a global name through his vision and raw talent and has revolutionised the art form of Greek Djing. In 2010, the DJ Krazy Kon brand hit the global stage with an overseas tour of the USA and sold out shows in Boston, New York, Chicago & Hollywood in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for another tour in 2011 coming soon.

Question: How would you describe Volume 9 of Greece 2011?

DJ Krazy Kon: Greece 2011 is the ninth volume in the series and is an annual release but I have finally convinced Sony to take it to a bi-annual release so now we'll be releasing an album, twice a year.

Greece 2011 is basically a very up-beat, Greek dance CD and it's created and produced by myself. This CD, Greece 2011, features 23 tracks in the CD 1 mix and an eight film clip DVD. The DVD is a new format we've tried, for the first time.

Question: Why did you decide to add a DVD featuring the hottest Greek music clips?

DJ Krazy Kon: We have tried different formats over the last eight Greece CD releases, previously we have released a flashback mix on the second CD, a 2 CD release with the latest hits and with another volume we had a funky Christmas songs CD as the second CD. We like to add value to the series with the double package and this time we added the film clips - we chose eight real funky Greek music film clips.

Question: Can you talk about the inspiration behind mixing Volume 9 of Greece 2011?

DJ Krazy Kon: I am a DJ/Producer and I like to promote and play cutting-edge Greek music. Greek music has really evolved over the last nine or ten years, since I've been doing this CD series. Over the last couple of years the music has got to the stage were it is very upbeat, dance music including Greek electro-house, Greek funky-house and there is a lot of artists in Greece using and remixing music by international DJs. The biggest sound in Greece is the rap-reggae-tonic dance sound, comparable to that of Pit Bull; Greece has their own rappers for the bangin' Greek dance sound that features rap vocalists - that's the sound in Greece right now and the sound that I have incorporated into Greece 2011.

Question: How many more Volumes in the Greece CD series will we see?

DJ Krazy Kon: I hope I'll be releasing Greece 2020! The more the merrier - I plan to keep on doing the Greece CD series as long as the fans and the lovers of Greece music keep supporting the series and my appearances. The CD series has an identity of its own now, people wait for the CD to come out, every year. We have broken a lot of barriers with the CD being available in mainstream stores like JB HiFi, Sanity and places like that. We are very close to having the Greece CD series available on iTunes.

The Greece 2011 volume has broken new grounds and is being distributed into the USA for the very first time. We are always raising the bar and doing something different with the CD series, which is awesome!

Question: How does it feel to be recognised as the most successful and influential Greek-Australian music artist of our time?

DJ Krazy Kon: I am very proud about that, in the sense that I have worked very hard the last 15 years to be recognised and when people think of Greek music they think of DJ Krazy Kon. I am very proud for the fact that I am the only Greek DJ outside of Greece; anywhere in the world, that has a CD series, which I think has a lot of significance.

One of my proudest things is that I have kids that are 10 years old buying my CD and I have people that are 70 years old buying my CD - there is a wide demographic of people that are buying my CD series and supporting my music. I enjoy being able to influence young kids to listen to Greece music and that's a comment I get regularly from parents who say "keep on doing what you're doing Kon because my kids are growing up listening to your music and Greek music", I am proud of that.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

DJ Krazy Kon: Good question! I still get a big buzz out of performing live; last year I did an American tour which was mind-blowing, to be flown over to America and perform in places likes LA, Boston, Chicago and play to second and third generation Greeks in America was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I love production work, I really get a buzz there, I have being DJing for 18 years and I have been producing for 12 years and I really get a buzz from production work. It took me three months to put Greece 2011 together through licencing, then programming, mixing, studio work and mastering the CD - but when the final product is out there, the comments in the first three weeks of the release have been phenomenal "it's one of the best of the series" - I get a huge buzz out of hearing that. I still get a buzz out of performing but production is what I am really focused on now.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

DJ Krazy Kon: I went to University and did a Bachelor of Business degree and while I was at University, like everyone else I needed money and I started DJing, I was playing all types of music. Then I saw the niche market for being a specialist Greek DJ and only playing Greek music and that's what I've done for the last 15 years and my name is know out there just for Greek music. I have always had a passion for music, I love all types of music but I really had a passion for Greek music and that is from my upbringing and from my parents. I jumped into it head first, I was DJing and then I tried to build a brand which now has become national and international. 18 years ago I had a couple of friends who were into DJing and I just jumped on board, with them and then carved a career out of it.
