Mt Buller has woken on Monday morning to discover 8cm of fresh snow layering the alpine village. Flakes began falling on Sunday evening and temperatures plummeted as low as -6.4 degrees. The cold conditions were ideal for snow making, with the machines blazing throughout the night and continuing this morning.
The fresh snow not only marks the first day of winter but has also fallen just five days out from the official start of the snow season on Saturday, June 6th. Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) General Manager, Laurie Blampied said the fresh snow has created a lot of excitement ahead of the weekend's festivities.
'We're only days away from the official opening of the snow season at Mt Buller and the excitement is really starting to build."
'Conditions over the coming days look ideal for snowmaking and with more snow forecast towards the end of the week, we will get skiers and boarders out on the slopes as soon as possible," Blampied said.
The 2015 snow season will officially commence with a weekend full of events, activities and celebrations. Festivities will kick off in the Village Square on Saturday afternoon with free face painting, complimentary glühwein, fireworks and a live performance by acclaimed Melbourne rock band, Calling All Cars. Saturday will also mark the official opening of the only Asian influenced food court in any Australian ski resort, Popo Kitchen.
The celebrations will continue on the Sunday, with the traditional Blessing of the Snow and more fun activities for the whole family.
