Grace Amos Everlong Cover

Grace Amos Everlong Cover

Upcoming singer-songwriter Grace Amos has announced a beautiful, delicate cover of the Foo Fighters' classic Everlong, tapping into the intimate beauty of the original in a completely unique way, out now. The release was a work of serendipity, as Foo Fighters have just announced their surprise one-off stadium show in Geelong on Friday March 4, 2022. Earlier this month, Grace revealed a raw, behind-the-scenes video to accompany the cover, showcasing the track's creation in the studio. Grace's take on Everlong follows the release of her latest original single, the vulnerable DECIDE, a stunning interrogation of the self as the singer grapples with developing feelings for another woman.

It takes serious musicianship to cover one of the worlds' most beloved songs and add something totally fresh – and that's exactly what Grace has done with Everlong. Her deep, soft vocal melts across a shimmering piano bed, allowing the listener to sink into the poignant, evocative lyricism; it's the kind of track you'd put on to slow dance to with your forever love, or at the end of a long, rainy night, curled up on the couch with a book and a tea. Accompanist Bill Risby created that sublime piano arrangement, and keyboardist Adam Sofo built the lush, abundant orchestral landscape to wrap around Grace's beautiful vocal.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the cover, Grace says, "Something about Everlong has always caught my eye. It's so beautiful, and so well known that I was confused as to why I couldn't find a cover of it that really showcases the lyrics. I feel that I've really achieved this, particularly with the mix of piano and strings in the instrumental."

The fearless young performer, who takes inspiration from the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Phoebe Bridgers and Olivia Rodrigo, is prolific beyond her years, and her latest single DECIDE is just a taste of her impressive songwriting abilities. She's set to perform at Valleyways Festival in September alongside triple j faves Skeggs and The Rubens – the first of what is sure to be a plethora of festival slots as Grace continues to share her considered, intelligent indie-pop songs with the world.

With Foo Fighters headlining at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Friday, the timing of Grace's Everlong cover couldn't be better. Grace felt it was the perfect time to release her version of this classic song to welcome Dave and the band back to Australia and to share this track with the world at a time when music can bring us all a few precious moments of peace.

Grace Amos' favourite women in music

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has always been one of my biggest inspirations. Not only is her music relatable, but so is her journey. I too, as a musician, have begun to release music that has elements in the country genre but want to delve deeper into figuring out my sound, who I am and what I want to write about. One of my favourite songs by her is 'Miss Americana and & The Heartbreak Prince'. It has so many elements to it, diving into "disillusionment…of politics and inequality" while simultaneously being about "finding one person who really sees you." I love her ability to create music that not only works commercially but allows her to dig deeper into current issues while also staying true to herself.

Vera Blue
Vera Blue is not only an artist, but a storyteller. One of my favourite albums of all time is her 2017 album, Perennial. The album, I believe, follows her journey through a break-up, finding her self-worth again. Recently this has been such a helpful tool for me in helping me find a way to live my life for myself, and no one else. The 9th track on the album, "Fools", is a reprise of sorts to "We Used To". In "Fools", we can see she's moved on from this former self, a powerful mindset for women everywhere. Her music has allowed me to see what I deserve and helped women everywhere feel empowered and confident.

girl in red
girl in red is such an empowering artist in itself, paving the way for so many other LGBTQ+ artists to be comfortable in the expression of their love and to be proud of who they are, but there's a particular song of hers that I believe is the most powerful of her songs. 'midnight love' is described as one of her most intimate songs about her realisation of the mistakes she's made in making another person feel small. The vulnerability and rawness of admitting your mistakes is so cathartic and so powerful. girl in red will forever be one of my favourite artists simply because she is so fully herself without sugar coating the human experience.

Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish has always been the type of artist who always speaks her mind and is never superficial or shallow. I never truly appreciated this side of her until I heard "Your Power" from her latest album. It's a powerful, heartfelt ballad about people taking advantage of younger people, in and out of relationships. It can be so daunting, standing up for yourself in a situation in which you feel powerless or inferior and I admire her courage to be so vulnerable. She is such an inspiration to young musicians and women everywhere and I've learnt so much about being a woman and being 100% myself from listening to her music.

Melanie Martinez
An artist I've always admired is Melanie Martinez. Every one of her songs is so purposeful and has so many intricate details and meanings that connect to issues that all women, and men, struggle with on a day to day basis. One of her songs that sticks out for me most is "Orange Juice". The song addresses her friend who struggles with bulimia due to self-image and a lack of self-worth. Martinez, in all of her songs, reiterates the need to empower each other and not drag girls down for who they are or what they're struggling with. Everyone needs someone at some point in their life to hold their hands and tell them that they deserve love and self-respect. Melanie's music has always been a constant reminder that I'm not alone in my struggles and that it's ok to not be ok.
