Described by triple j as holding 'poise and drama in equal measure,' GUTHRIE (they/them) has released their debut EP INCUBATOR, a stunning collection of world-class folktronica. The EP follows the singles Dickhead Song and Best You Ever Had, which were both highly praised and saw support from triple j, Unearthed, frankie magazine, The Music and more. GUTHRIE is celebrating the release with a headline show at Leadbeater in Richmond, VIC on August 26, with tickets running at an innovative, accessible pricing structure that leaves no music fans out.
Within the impressive four songs that make up INCUBATOR, GUTHRIE's voice remains a steady constant, breathy, deep and powerful, flexing across their range with confidence and ease. The production is surprising and innovative, as is the tracklist – a cover of Kings of Leon's global hit Use Somebody hits with as much emotional weight as any of the other tracks on the record. When asked about the themes explored on the EP, GUTHRIE answers, "Identity, queerness, agency, friendships and love. The EP moves from intimate, raw folktronica to dark, industrial electronic, and uses organic warmth and dark elements in equal measure."
The first single from the EP, Dickhead Song, was met with a warm welcome from audiences, familiar with the sad pull of the song's theme. The track opened a conversation with GUTHRIE and the world, the perfect introduction to GUTHRIE's thoughtful, inspired sound. Best You Ever Had, woozy with longing and drama, was met with similar praise – and as GUTHRIE's world deepens, Australia's music industry watches with eager interest.
GUTHRIE is set to perform the songs of INCUBATOR live at the Leadbeater Hotel in Melbourne on August 26 to celebrate the release. The ticket pricing structure for this show is built on several accessible layers, paving the way for a gig landscape that does not discriminate.
