Brother sister duo JANEY today release their new single and video, Hurts Me Like Hell.
While still encompassing their signature 80s synth-pop sound, the duo's new downtempo track is almost ballad-like in feel. This song is about personal evolution and the exploration of unique ideologies that can underpin life and faith, and it journeys through the pain of hurting those closest to you when it's time to pave your own path forward. Hurts Me Like Hell is the duo's most personal release to date.
"The song was birthed from a moment of disconnect with a family member of ours," tells Billy. "It's incredible how much body language can tell so much about how a person feels about you, not to mention when you're a hypersensitive melancholy artist."
Initially penned by Sarah in her Bali home, the duo finished the demo in Billy's studio in Maroubra, Sydney before taking it to Nashville-based producer, Luke O'Dea and later enlisting producer David Andrew (Gang of Youths, Jayesslee) before having it mixed by Ben Whincop (Panama, Stan Walker).
Set at night under the tree's in Sydney's Hyde Park, in the dimly lit underground train tunnels in the city and in the back of Billy's Volkswagen van driving through the side streets of Redfern, the video positions the duo in a more sombre, introspective setting than their usual upbeat-pop aesthetic.
Sydney based videographer Ash Lim (Phebe Starr, Xavier Dunn, Jaguar Jonze) and lighting technician Dodge Pangburn (US) worked in collaboration with the band, and the result brings the powerful emotions of the track fully to life.
JANEY's debut 2016 single Today Could Be The Day was featured in various Jetstar TVCs, and the weight of this win is summed up perfectly by music publication Tone Deaf: "Most bands have to struggle for years before they get any national attention and it takes a lot of good fortune to have your song featured in ad. But JANEY hit a bullseye on their first try..."
JANEY's last single L.A. was received with huge international and local media support, swooned over by triple Unearthed and was launched at a sold-out show at Sydney's Sly Fox with local indie-electro darlings Vast Hill.
