Interview with katie MAC

Question: How would you describe your music?

katie MAC: I think my vibe is upbeat, honest, and lyrically candid. I want people to feel empowered by my music and like they really know me.

Question: What inspired the song, Heartless?

katie MAC: Heartless was definitely inspired by my real life experience of leaving someone that I loved and my hometown. I worked on it with my producer, Kipper Gray and he really helped bring that nostalgic vibe to life!

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

katie MAC: Well right now it's definitely Heartless, but anytime people know the lyrics to a song, I have so much fun!

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

katie MAC: This might be lame, but it's definitely my family! They all live in Kansas and it's really hard for them to get out to shows, but I love them so much.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

katie MAC: I think they're both so different and I love them both. Performing live is definitely more of a high for me- I absolutely love the energy in a live setting. That being said, I think that there are creative nuances that I only feel in a studio setting. I have so much fun doing both!

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

katie MAC: Definitely my need to outwardly express my inner emotions and experiences. Making music is definitely cathartic for me in a lot of ways. I'm also really motivated by connection with other people. Like, nothing makes me happier than when people tell me they related to my song.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

katie MAC: Currently, I'm really into everything Ariana Grande is doing. Some other artists I can't stop listening to are Bebe Rexha, Juice World, Julia Michaels, Charlie XCX and Troye Sivan.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

katie MAC: There wasn't a ton of music where I grew up, but I always felt really pulled to it. When I moved to Nashville to go to Belmont, I had a few amazing mentors that really helped me understand the industry and encouraged me.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

katie MAC: This is so tough! Probably Julia Michaels because I think everything she touches turns to gold.

Question:
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?

katie MAC: I think the biggest challenge for me is always comparison and patience. It can be tempting to compare yourself to other artists and writers, but the reality is that everyone's journey is completely different!

Question: What's a typical day like?

katie MAC: I like to wake up early and spend time doing things for myself- like exercise, reading etc. Then, I normally head to a studio writing session or recording session. When that's done, I normally have time to go support other music at a show or see my friends! Then I do it all over again!
