Interview with Kieren Springthorpe

Kieren Springthorpe was inspired to become an actor by watching amazing actors on television. Kieren now is a rising star who is attending the Hollywood Immersive workshop with Lilly Dawson and Margie Haber. His advice is to "take every opportunity that is thrown at you, or near you. If you enjoy it then don't let anyone stand in your way".

What inspired you to begin training in the acting industry?

Kieren Springthorpe: Watching all the amazing actors on the TV when I was growing up and the thought of being able to act for a living was the best news i had heard in years. Being able to do something I love in my spare time and as work is something that i have found to be the most awesome experience in my life.

How long have you wanted to act for?

Kieren Springthorpe: Since I was about 8, when I was 6 was scared of acting because I thought it made you lose your voice and die....thanks professor Dumbledore (Harry Potter) from the first two movies!

What tips do you have for others wanting to get into the acting industry?

Kieren Springthorpe: Do whatever you can and take every opportunity that is thrown at you, or near you. If you enjoy it then don't let anyone stand in your way.

What do you enjoy most about acting?

Kieren Springthorpe: Being able to be a crazy, loud annoying, funny, stupid idiot without having to worry about consequences and being able to become someone else or transform from happy to sad in seconds and being whoever or whatever you want every time.

What acting have you done previously?

Kieren Springthorpe: I started off acting at the Australian Youth theatre when I was 12. We put on a play that we all helped to create and I played the lead. Also, when I was 13, I studied at the Northern Beaches Youth Theatre for a year. We put on a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Since the start of year 9 (14) I have been studying with Suzie Steen at actors creative after school once a week. I have joined her agency, NSA management, and have been doing some background work on Home and Away as well as a cancer awareness ad and a short film. I have also been involved in my schools annual musicals. I have been in the chorus in my first year and then a minor lead and this year I got a main lead.

Do you prefer performing on stage or in front of the camera?

Kieren Springthorpe: Most of my experience so far has been on stage but i have always wanted to appear on camera. While theatre amazes me and has given me great experience, I will always want to base my career on camera.

What roles do you prefer to perform?

Kieren Springthorpe: I don't mind at all. As long as I am acting I'm happy. I do like comedy roles, like the one I have for the school musical this year, but am perfectly happy with serious roles. Not trying to be cocky, but I think I do well in all areas of acting. I have played serious and funny roles since i have been acting and have found them all to be incredibly fun.

Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the acting industry?

Kieren Springthorpe: If you count my naivety as a six year old kid, I used to think that all the famous actors were just chosen for roles. I had never thought that auditioning would be required ever!

What actress/actors do you prefer to watch?

Kieren Springthorpe: I am a fan of Johnny Depp, Geoffery Rush, Anthony Hopkins, Ricky Gervais, Steve Carell and Tony Shalhoub . I don't necessarily like movies because they have certain people in them, but I will usually go see a movie if there is someone I like in it.

If you could act beside any actor or actress who would you choose?

Kieren Springthorpe: Steve Carell, because he is one of the funniest actors I have ever seen and being able to act along side him and watch him improvise and act would be just amazing.

What has been your biggest challenge in regards to acting?

Kieren Springthorpe: I can't think of one that is really worth mentioning. If you ask me in a few years time I'll probably have a good answer.

What is a typical day like for you?

Kieren Springthorpe: Wake up. Go back to sleep. Wake up way too late, quickly get ready for school with mum yelling at me to hurry up, try and stay awake at school (because it's boring, not because I'm tired), either going to acting or having a sport training, then home.

What's next for you?

Kieren Springthorpe: Hopefully when I finish school I will go over to America and be discovered, if not then, then I'll try out for NIDA or WAAPA and maybe go or try again in America until I hit it big =D

Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Kieren Springthorpe: Sport, Food, Acting, sleep and no stress.
