After five hit albums, a Mercury Prize nomination and countless sold-out shows with The View, the band's frontman Kyle Falconer will finally tour Australia solo this July.
Thursday 11 July 2019 - Northcote Social Club, Melbourne Friday 12 July 2019 - Milk Factory, Brisbane Saturday 13 July 2019 - Factory Theatre, Sydney Sunday 14 July 2019 - Badlands, Perth
His debut album 'No Thank You' is a raw and brutally honest collection of songs, much of the record finds Falconer exploring a tumultuous time in his life. The majority of the songs cover a period which commenced when he entered rehab in the summer of 2016, right through to the present day where he's now embracing a new life and outlook as a father.
Plenty of influential names have recognised Falconer's talents over his career to date. He performed on Mark Ronson's hit 'The Bike Song' and also joined his live band The Business Intl. for some memorable performances which often included their take on the Amy Winehouse / Zutons classic 'Valerie'. Ronson and the legendary producer Quincy Jones also teamed up to provide a testimonial to support Falconer's application for a visa for him to be able to work in America.
Kyle Falconer was a founding member of The View, the band signing their first record deal when he was just 18-years-old. Their debut album 'Hats Off To The Buskers' went straight to #1 in January 2007 and was later nominated for a Mercury Prize. Two of the band's subsequent four albums also hit the Top 10, and they also released an unorthodox 'best of' in the shape of 'Seven Year Setlist'.
Interview with Kyle Falconer
Question: How would you describe your music?
Kyle Falconer: My serious issues dealt with in a melodic energetic haze.
Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?
Kyle Falconer: My favourite song live is Poor Me! It's a powerful song and the song means a lot to me and it's my daughter, Wyldes favourite so....
Question: What should we expect from your upcoming tour?
Kyle Falconer: We're going to be doing it slightly different as it's just me and my guitarist but we do these versions with much more balls and it is quite unique from what anyone who has seen us play like before.
Question: What are you looking forward to most about visiting Australia?
Kyle Falconer: It will be my fifth time in Australia, my first solo tour so I'm looking forward to just coming out and seeing the reactions you all have down under to new material but also I just LOVE the place, specially Melbourne and Sydney. I actually thought of moving there when I was 24. That fell through as I had my band The View and realised I can't just run away from commitments. What a life.
Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?
Kyle Falconer: Probably Eddie Murphy. Love his stand up and if he came to see me he'd probably want to come back stage after we blew his mind so he could come and entertain us while we filled him with alcohol and made him perform.
Question: What motivates you most when writing music?
Kyle Falconer: Normally it's my past. But then sometimes I can just get mad ideas while out on walk with my daughters and have to run back with the double buggy to write crazy shit down, the ones that make you feel excited like your about to go on a rollercoaster they are always the ones that stay the strongest.
Question: How difficult was it to relive certain times of your life, whilst working on No Thank You?
Kyle Falconer: My family definitely inspire me, my sisters, my deceased parents, my fiancé, my daughters, my great great dead aunties. It wasn't difficulty to relive things. I am a very honest person and sometimes that gets me in trouble but also helps me not have issues with expressing myself. Even though it seems sad or tough it's just part of life and feel liberated documenting it.
Question: What message do you hope we take from No Thank You?
Kyle Falconer: Everyone should know that it's ok to have problems and don't be scared because with the right help you can always bounce back, I'm lucky I met my fiancé just at breaking point, we now have two beautiful daughters and they really give me the strength I need. I met Laura my fiancé for a reason, when you think it's all gone to shit something always pops up, whether it be love, wealth, or just freedom. Keep the faith.
Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
Kyle Falconer: Been listening to Mike Snow, really love the production and song writing. Also love The Struts. They make me super happy! Great band!
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Kyle Falconer: The reason I wanted to play music was the Beatles always was, always will be. They light up my life.
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Kyle Falconer: Would like to work with the Miike Snow's guys right now but McCartney would be the obvious choice.
Question: What's a typical day like?
Kyle Falconer: My days are different all the time. Right now I'm in LA, next week I'm home. I just finished tour in the UK. My days when I'm not working I am still thinking about what to write, always am. It's an addiction.
