Earlier this year, acclaimed drummer and producer Nick Martyn shared the latest from his Las Mar solo endeavour, with the frenetic single 'Weekend Repair'. Following previously released tracks 'Sif Ribi', 'Albino Rhino' and 'Something That I Know', 'Weekend Repair' presented Las Mar at his most fiery, showcasing Martyn's signature beat oddities beneath raw and urgent vocals, textured guitars and funk-driven basslines. Now, the eclectic producer and performer is thrilled to reveal the final single to be lifted from his forthcoming sophomore LP, with the mesmerising mantra, 'I No Say'.
Previously untitled and holding the release date close to his chest, it can now be revealed that Las Mar's record Don't Read Everything You Believe will be released Friday 9 October, with the final single 'I No Say' out now to celebrate.
"'I No Say' is a psychedelic journey through tight, complex rhythms to wide open sonic landscapes. With a clash of sound worlds - chanting, tin whistles, washy guitars, homemade string instruments – this song is a funk oddity of epic proportions." – Las Mar
Since releasing his first EP as Las Mar in 2014, Nick Martyn has forged a completely singular sound funneling post-rock epicness, Afrobeat funkiness, drumming wizardry and general trippiness into songs and live improvisations that stay with you long after the final vibration leaves your chest. Inspired by disparate elements – surrealist paintings, Afro-Cuban chants, sad-boy songs, The Funk, travels to distant lands, electronic dance music – Las Mar has created a home for a unique artistic voice. As with his previous releases, Don't Read Everything You Believe, sees Las Mar recording every sound from scratch using ageing keyboards, exotic strings and percussion, guitars, the human voice, and field recordings to deliver an epic sound from a DIY ethos.
As a drummer in Melbourne's world-class music scene, Nick Martyn has worked with some of Australia's most renowned artists including Gotye, D.D Dumbo, Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote), Matt Corby and Barney McAll, and was also a founding member of acclaimed outfit Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes. Las Mar has performed live throughout Japan, Australia and Europe, his part-realised, part-improvised live one-man-band show showcasing an incredible energy from behind the drums, combined with angelic vocals and impressive sleight-of-hand synthesizer skills.
Wrap your ears around the kinetic rhythms and spontaneous energy of Las Mar in his new long play, Don't Read Everything You Believe.
