Last Night of the Proms

Last Night of the Proms

It doesn't get more British than the Last Night of the Proms.

And it doesn't get more Australian than legendary batsman, Sir Donald Bradman.

This July the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will bring the two together in a special Proms performance at Hamer Hall, with renowned Australian soprano Greta Bradman who will perform a work composed by her grandfather, the cricket king Sir Donald Bradman.

A uniquely British event held annually at Royal Albert Hall, the Last Night of the Proms is the final performance in an eight-week long Proms series, cherished by Union Jack-waving Brits for its cheery choruses and spiffing showpieces.

MSO Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis has conducted more Last Nights than any other in recent history, and brought the prestigious Proms to Melbourne in 2014. The MSO's musings on the Motherland have marked a not-to-be-missed night at Hamer Hall ever since!

In 2019, the MSO's British best will be complemented by Australian soprano Greta Bradman, who joins Sir Andrew Davis for a touching performance of her grandfather Sir Donald Bradman's 1930 composition, Every Day is a Rainbow Day for Me. This special song will reveal the legendary Australian batsman as an accomplished pianist and composer, a side of the great man unfamiliar to most. Greta Bradman will also bring to the audience the passion of Verdi's Leonora from the opera Il Trovatore and, in contrast the cheekiness of Rosina from Rossini's Barber of Seville.

Returning after his triumphant appearance in the MSO's Season Opening Gala, Soloist in Residence Lu Siqing will join the Proms party to perform Saint-Saëns' showstopper, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. A sweet shepherd song evolves into spectacular violin fireworks in this feisty flamenco favourite.

Expect the full gamut of high-spirited favourites, from Pomp and Circumstance to Jerusalem and Rule, Britannia! Singing along, flag-waving, streamer-throwing, cheering and clapping are all enthusiastically encouraged in this joyful performance.

Grab a cup of English Breakfast tea and settle in as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's own Barmy Army, for one-night-only! .
