A Visual Guide to Minimalism

Simplify life and amplify living by mastering the fundamentals of minimalism through this visual guide to embracing a minimalist lifestyle.

How can living with less contribute to a greater sense of fulfillment?

It may seem contradictory, yet the minimalist lifestyle, which focuses on scaling back your possessions and simplifying your life to just the essentials, achieves just that.

Adopt minimal living, and you'll find that less is more:
More time because you don't waste it caring for and organizing stuff.
More space because you don't fill it with objects of marginal value.
More money because you don't spend it on unnecessary things.
More enjoyment because your energy is spent on experiences and connections.

Using decision trees, flow charts, icons and other graphics, Less shows how minimalism can be applied to any area of life – including home, wardrobe, décor, cooking, cleaning, finances, and organizing your time – and how it can be adapted to suit your own goals and help you achieve your version of happiness.

Interview with Rachel Aust

Question: Can you explain your personal approach to minimalism?

Rachel Aust: I'm definitely not an extremist, like I'm not out here with just 1 spoon and the ability to live out of a backpack, I respect those who can do that, but my job does require me to own more things, some quick examples are camera gear, and a small collection of ceramics and tableware for my recipe development photography. I'd say my approach to minimalism revolves around decluttering and reducing new purchases of things which do not serve me. Anything which isn't a necessity or cannot regularly serve a purpose in my life/home isn't there.

Question: How did living with less change how you approach other aspects of your life?

Rachel Aust: It really made me analyse how I use my time. When you start to look at what's important to you (perhaps just at your possessions at first) this will inevitably flow to other areas of your life too. I've learnt how to create more calm for myself, which is such a refreshing change from how much pressure and stress I used to put on myself constantly.

Question: How has your approach to minimalism changed, recently?

Rachel Aust: Recently I've started diving into more zero waste! I think being completely zero waste would require an intense amount of focus and dedication, so for now my aim has been to dramatically reduce the amount of waste I produce. If you really sit and think about, how many coffee cups are being thrown away right now, how many individual plastic wraps in grocery stores are being wasted, how many single use tubes of beauty products get thrown out each day (to just pinpoint a few) it's pretty mind boggling. I just want to reduce my footprint and more responsible with the purchases I do make. Our planet is struggling, so even if everyone chose 1-2 things to do differently to reduce their waste it would make a large impact.

Question: Currently, how would you describe your version of happiness?

Rachel Aust: Early mornings watering my plants, sun on my skin and nourishing food.
