Emerging singer/songwriter L E X has announced her arrival on the pop scene with the release of her debut single "C'EST LA VIE." The new single, which features brooding dark-pop melodies and a powerful chorus with links to her Serbian background, establishes L E X as one of the most exciting new faces in the industry.
Infused with personal reflections and broader notions of the emotional turmoil that comes with growing up and finding one's place in the world, LEX describes the voice she so beautifully champions in the single.
"At its very core, 'C'EST LA VIE' captures a feeling of angst from a girl who has grown up forced to suppress her emotions and afflictions. "
"As an artist, my work is a reflection of my own experiences. I tell stories about the path I have been on, so that others can feel empowered and relate to those experiences or feelings."
With notable influences stemming from Billie Eilish, Julia Michaels and Charlotte Lawrence, L E X's pensive, dark-pop sound voices a fragile vulnerability that can be heard through her deeply personal, heartfelt lyrics.
Born into a family from war-torn Serbia, residing on Australia's East Coast, L E X was not born into music, however at a young age she discovered its empowering abilities as a means to escape her reality.
L E X has already previously worked alongside top producers/songwriters in Australia and the United States, including Xavier Dunn (GRAACE, Jack River, CXLOE), Mike Daley (Chris Brown, Lady Gaga), Cyrus Villaneuva and Kota Banks. She now splits her time between Sydney and the Gold Coast.
Interview with LEX
Question: How would you describe your music?
LEX: I'd say my sound can be defined as dark pop with a fragile vulnerability, combining brooding sounds with honest and heartfelt lyrics.
Question: Can you tell us about C'est La Vie?
LEX: "C'EST LA VIE" captures a feeling of angst, from a girl who has grown up forced to suppress her emotions and affliction. She doesn't have to choose between her fragile vulnerability or her strong demeanour. Both exist in her. She's used to holding them both close to her, but she's learnt to only show the world her mask.
Question: How does it feel to release your debut single?
LEX: It somehow still feels a little bit surreal, even though I've been preparing and waiting for this moment for so long now. It's a bit scary letting the whole world into my vulnerable side that nobody knows, but I'm ready and I hope people can relate when they feel unheard.
Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?
LEX: Growing up I felt so alone because I couldn't express my feelings with anyone, so I just want people to feel heard and not alone.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
LEX: This is a tough one because I've never performed my own songs live and I think this would definitely be on another level to performing other people's songs. So for now I'm gonna have to say recording, just because it's writing about my own experiences and telling my story, with so much emotion out on the line; it's really a feeling like no other.
Question: Can we expect an upcoming tour?
LEX: Once we get out of the Covid mess, who knows what will happen. I'd love to start doing shows and show everyone some of my other songs I've been working on.
Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?
LEX: I would definitely have to choose Beyonce. She has been my inspiration for as long as I can remember; just everything about her as an artist is incredible. Having her at MY show would be the absolute dream.
Question: What motivates you most when writing music?
LEX: Myself. Writing music for me is like therapy. I hide my emotions and don't talk to anyone about what's going on in my life or how I'm feeling, so writing music is my way of getting it all out. All of my music is about my own experiences in life and that's how I want to keep it.
Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
LEX: Right now I'm obsessed with Tate McRae! Everything she releases is so damn good, I can't get enough.
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
LEX: I loved singing since I was a little girl, but I think watching Beyonce's concerts on repeat every night inspired me to want to take music seriously.
Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?
LEX: I definitely thought that everyone in the music industry would be selfish and only care about themselves, but I think the industry in Australia is the complete opposite. All the artists I've met in Australia have been so willing to help however they can and just so supportive of each other, which is honestly so great.
Question: What's a typical day like?
LEX: During the day I work for my brother's company, Hismile. I wake up at 4:30am everyday to go to the gym at the office, then I start work for the day and I'm home by 5pm to spend time with my puppy and work on my music.
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
LEX: Honestly, probably just having the privilege to get into studio sessions with some of the most talented people and write songs together.
Question: What's next, for you?
LEX: I'm just gonna keep on writing and I want to have my next song out in the next few months, then hopefully time to put some shows together!
