Central Coast family band Little Quirks - Abbey, Mia and Jaymi – have unveiled their glorious single, Florence's Town, marking their debut release for new label home, ABC Music.
Florence's Town is an epic pop number which sees the band in full vocal flight, singing their way to an imaginary city, and there is simply no way for the listener to turn down an invitation to come on that adventure. Finishing touches are courtesy of Nashville based mix wizard Ryan Hewitt (The Lumineers, Vance Joy).
Abbey explains, "Florence's Town is a story of people searching to find a magical, fictional place called Florence's Town. The characters within this story are trying to prove their worth and earn their way into the love and freedom this place holds. In a world where unfortunately everything and everyone can be judged, I wanted it to be an anthem of empowerment for everyone feeling like they don't fit into the social 'norm'.
I started the idea of Florence's Town on a train somewhere after hearing the name of another passenger was Florence, which I really loved. I sang a melody quietly into my phone hoping nobody on the train would hear. After I got home I wrote the whole story of these characters, interspersed with my own experiences. I listened to all my secret train recordings and put the rest of it all together that night."
The video for Florence's Town, directed by Little Quirks, brings this narrative to life, with its playful nod to The Wizard Of Oz.
Despite their age, drummer Mia being the youngest at just 16 years of age, this Central Coast family band has clocked up seven years of musical experience together since they began to hone their craft busking at local farmers markets. In recent years you would find charming crowds at music festivals and venues up and down the East Coast, sharing stages with artists such as The Teskey Brothers, The Preatures, Xavier Rudd, Ruby Fields, Tim Rogers and Alex the Astronaut.
The band create all of their music, cover art and videos themselves. The two sisters in the band, Abbey (vocals/guitar) and Mia Toole (drums), have a backyard recording studio at their family home (they built the studio with their Dad, Adam). While their cousin Jaymi Toole (vocals/mandolin) creates all the band's visual artwork out of her bedroom studio just down the road.
The three members are prolific in their output - a trait inherited by their parents who played in bands together in the 80's – having released three EPs and two standalone singles over the past three years. Their 2018 single 'Crumbled' has been a runaway favourite on Spotify with over 3 million streams. The band has also amassed a loyal following for their powerful and distinctive DIY videos on YouTube.
"These Quirks have the nous and charm of the greats. Deft songwriting and performers of depth and levity. Watch 'em rise" – Tim Rogers
