Multi award winning producer M-Phazes releases two new tracks today through Sony Music Entertainment Australia, 'Heavy' featuring Josh Hardy and 'Bad Behaviour' featuring Daniel Johns. The anthemic 'Heavy' ft. Josh Hardy of Hopium comprises huge emotional synths, swooning vocals and those signature M-Phazes drums. The track was premiered this past Tuesday evening on triple j.
After an afternoon trading tips, tricks and 'geeking out' in the studio, the boys from Hopium, Josh Hardy & Dann Hume, decided to show M-Phazes a seemingly throw-away demo idea. While insignificant to the initial creators, M-Phazes immediately saw how powerful 'Heavy' could be and just "had to be a part of it".
If it wasn't for that foresight, some gentle persuasion and importantly some extreme begging to finally convince Josh Hardy & Dann Hume to hand over the stems, the track could easily have wound up on the cutting room floor. It was this seemingly unimportant turn of events that has now delivered so much more.
Also released today is 'Bad Behaviour' featuring Daniel Johns. A driving, near industrial nod to some of his big beat predecessors with Daniel Johns, not heard sounding this aggressive since the mid 90's.
"With Bad Behaviour, Phazes produced a dangerous, primal track with an urgency about it that inspired me to sing in a way I haven't explored in a while. Mark and I have forged a creative alliance that spans multiple projects and we will be working together for a long time. 'Bad Behaviour' isn't our first nor our last collaboration but it might be the most menacing record we ever make together." Says Johns.
M-Phazes adds 'Bad Behaviour' is one of the most exciting songs I've worked on and I think it cements Daniel as one of the most amazing artists to ever come out of Australia."
Coming off the back of the infectious 'Golden Years' ft. Ruel and 'Messiah' ft. Alison Wonderland, The Southern Hemisphere's go to producer has promised to unload a barrage of new music over the coming months. Recently taking to his Instagram to say: "After 8 years of co-writes, re-writes, label politics, building studios and relocating to LA, I'm finally ready to release a collection of new music that almost never saw the light of day." Phazes said "I'm constantly producing music for other artists but always found it hard to really "finish" my own songs. Those feelings of "is this good enough?" created a weight of expectation that dragged me down, feeling like the music I put out defined my worth as a person. I know I'm not the only one who goes through this and I feel like it's a big problem throughout the artistic community."
It seems that not only is M-Phazes prepared to talk about his artistic challenges and share his point of view, he is also not going to let them get the better of him anytime soon. "I'm learning to deal with those feelings, and whilst it will be a constant challenge I can happily say that I'm in a positive headspace, and from this week you'll be hearing a whole lot more from me and my friends."
