Marama Dina

Marama Dina, a new exhibition at Campbelltown Arts Centre sees iTaukei women (Indigenous Fijian) take over the gallery space to celebrate and share the exploration of cultural rejuvenation with the wider community. It will run from August 17.

The entirely artist-led exhibition features new commissions by 10 artists from Australia and Aoteroa New Zealand, and considers female iTaukei identities in the diaspora - away from Fiji or away from village life, as well as what it means to connect with empowering cultural knowledge previously eroded by colonisation and migration.

The exhibition is also borne of research and engagement, led by The Veiqia Project: a creative research collective of female artists and researchers inspired by veiqia, the traditional practice of Fijian female tattooing (marking the transition to womanhood, it was forcibly halted by British colonisers in the 19th century). The collective uses workshops and exhibitions such as this to invite Fijian (and other Pasifika) women on a journey of artistic and cultural discovery.
