Production Background

After its huge success as an online game, with attendant success in merchandising and licensing, Moshi Monsters had gained a substantial and loyal fan base. Mind Candy had created a vast world and CEO Michael Acton Smith and Chief Creative/ Headwriter/ Director of Moshiology Steve Cleverley both believed that it warranted further exploration. They wanted to turn our Moshi avatars into movie stars. With that in mind, they started talking to various producers about Moshi Monsters: The Movie.

Jocelyn Stevenson, a UK-based producer with many years' experience in the kids media industry, was charged with overseeing the production that would help deepen the property's relationship with its fans, introduce it to people who were unfamiliar with it and expand its reach.

Wip Vernooij had been the animator/director on all of the Moshi music videos and Sanj Sen (with Steve Cleverley) had composed all of the Moshi music to date. As all were eager to work on the film, the decision was made to produce in-house, with Wip directing, Steve co-writing with Jocelyn and Sanj producing the score. Giles Healy was also hired to steer the ship out of the harbour and keep it on course.

Spider Eye Studios were bought on board to do the animation. The aim was to create a '2 1/2 D animation" – i.e. animated in Celaction with many background elements in 3D. Mind Candy was also committed to supporting the UK animation industry, so Spider Eye was the perfect choice.

A significant part of bringing the Moshi Monsters to life was giving them real, character voices – as opposed to the amusing but incomprehensible gobbledeegook used in-game. As well as new cast, many of those involved in the in-game dialogue or on the Music Rox album (Tom Clarke-Hill (Furi, Roary), Phillipa Alexander (Poppet) and Ashley Slater (Dr Strangeglove, Zommer). Rajesh David (Bobbi SingSong) and, of course, Steve Cleverley (Sweet Tooth)) came back to develop their character voices further.
