National Young Writers' Festival

A masquerade ball, a science party, pop-up street events and a bunch of open mic nights lead the program for National Young Writers' Festival 2016.

This year's event boasts the largest artist count in NYWF history with 117 writers coming from every state and territory as well as New Zealand. Among the many making their way to Newcastle will be Osman Faruqi, Alia Gabres, Liam Pieper, Briohny Doyle, Zohab Khan, Alison Whittaker, Omar Musa and Shu-Ling Chua. This smorgasbord of talent will be workshopping, reading, debating and panelling their way through the many challenges, trends and revolutions of the contemporary writing scene over a whopping 99 events, covering topics like imposter syndrome, (re)writing gender, censorship, publishing from the underground, and comedy in Australia.

Expect to see a return of festival favourites like the Late Night Readings, Zine Fair and the annual festival ball – a Labyrinth-inspired masquerade party of ghouls and goblins.
 
Over four exciting days, Newcastle will transform into a thriving hub of activity in a bold celebration of creativity and inclusivity.
 
Held as part of This is Not Art (TiNA) alongside Crack Theatre Festival and Critical Animals, NYWF will inhabit spaces across the city – cafes and pubs, the Newcastle Museum and tram, and the streets, nooks and crannies of Newcastle.
 
We're thrilled to offer a number of cross-festival events this year with our TiNA co-presenters Crack and Critical Animals, including daily TiNA talks and an improvisational art attack.
