Articulate, gorgeous and talented, Olivia is inspired by SZA, H.E.R., Lauryn Hill and Michael Jackson, and has just released her debut single -Moment' to Australian radio, which is based on a unique encounter in Los Angeles. She explains, 'I was on Santa Monica Pier in LA, just walking, and I saw this guy and he took his headphones off, and we just had this fleeting connection. It was a moment, in every sense of the word."
'Music runs through my veins", 17-year-old singer-songwriter Olivia says, 'and if I'm not rehearsing, I'm writing or recording. I'm laser-focused and such a perfectionist."
-Moment' effortlessly genre-hops, and as Olivia says, 'I'm more into urban music and R'n'B, but I thought it would be fun to have a different flavor in there too. The chorus is quite pop-oriented, but the verses are more urban."
Although she's based in Sydney, Olivia spent a lengthy period honing her craft in Los Angeles. She says, 'As an artist, I think it's really important to write your own music, so I went to LA to write some new material. I went there for an initial stint of two weeks, but I loved it so much, that I returned a week later and stayed for two months!"
In LA, Olivia collaborated with acclaimed songwriter Kortland Jeray, Sam Hook (who's written material for Chris Brown and Mary J. Blige) and Tommy Brown (who's produced, amongst others, Ariana Grande and Black Eyed Peas). Olivia says, 'Tommy has a team of people that live in his house full-time who just create music. His house has so many studios; I'd go into the studio at 11pm and didn't get to sleep till 6am. It was such an incredible experience."
Olivia is a self-confessed fashion fanatic ('My style is super eclectic. I love mixing up streetwear and high-end labels and I make sure I style all of my photo shoots"), and she also has future aspirations to create her own clothing line.
For now, though, Olivia plans to release her material organically - 'I might drop a surprise EP soon" – and is focused on growing her Australian fan base, and hopefully breaking the lucrative American market. Highly ambitious with the talent to match, Olivia explains, 'This is my Plan A. I don't believe in having a Plan B."
OLIVIA is supporting Jai Waetford on his Australian tour, kicking off this Saturday 8 July in Sydney at Oxford Art Factory.
