One Shot Workshop

Sydney Film School, in collaboration with Sydney Underground Festival, will open their doors to film lovers, for the fourth annual One Shot Workshop, (Saturday September 7th, 2013) to be held at Sydney Film School.

Filmmakers will be guided through the processes, devices and challenges of the ever increasingly popular one shot form - a process of film creation without cuts or editing.

This theoretical and hands-on workshop has been designed to give participants the tools to create one shot films. Increasingly the one shot technique is being adapted and used throughout popular social media technology such as Instagram and Vine.

Sydney Film School director and feature filmmaker Ben Ferris along with acclaimed cinematographer James Barahanos will educate students on film technique.

The one shot technique can be used as a dramatic device that experiments with time and space to build tension and a sense of nostalgia. Considered high risk film making, it can be extremely difficult, however iconic film directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Bela Tarr and Stanley Kubrick have all drawn on the long-take filmmaking style.

The full day workshop will demonstrate how to integrate the one shot technique with narrative and dramatic aims and explore the challenges of devising and shooting in this style. Students will have the opportunity to create a 'one shot' film and discuss the effectiveness of the choices they have made.

The workshop is open to the public and prior filmmaking experience is not needed.
