Australians are relying on the internet at work to keep their life in order with 65% of employees admitting they use the internet on the job for personal use and a further 58% are willing to sacrifice their coffee fix to stay connected to the net!
The survey conducted by linkme.com.au, Australia?s leading career building and networking site reveals that of the 1228 people surveyed, 19.5% of employees confessed to spending more than eight hours online per week for personal use with the boss being none the wiser.
Mr Campbell Sallibank CEO of Linkme.com.au says:
"Generation Y are the leading guilty party when it comes to using the internet for personal use. Of the 18 -24 year age group 100% admit they use the net to email friends with 33% spending up to 4 hours per week doing so. This is followed by 74% of the 25-30 year olds confessing they get online for non work related purposes such as emailing friends and searching the web for social activities. "
"The internet has now become a form of life support for many people with 66% using the net to pay bills and 48% use the opportunity to search for jobs."
"With standard working hours a thing of the past employees use the internet to keep in touch with the outside world. It allows them to get things done which would normally be left for after hours. Email also allows you to keep in contact with friends which you may not have time to do during the week. "
"It can be difficult for workers to juggle work and home responsibilities as they very often over lap. Long hours can lead to personal lives being left behind. "
"As long as work is being completed I think most bosses understand that their will be a degree of personal internet use during the working day, however employees need to keep the hours they do so under control. "
