Pluto Jonze Sucker Interview
Indie-pop maestro Pluto Jonze is back with the video for his new single -Sucker'. Having delivered his debut album -Eject' (featuring Triple J favourites -Eject' and -Plastic Bag In A Hurricane') last year to critical acclaim Pluto has spent the greater part of 2014 travelling With the band playing live drenched in psychedelic vibes the video visually unravels with Pluto Jonze crooning the lyrics interspersed by hallucinatory images that vividly encapsulate the 90's.
-Sucker' is a guitar heavy love-sick confession, with an early 90's fuzz vibe, and a classic soft verse-loud chorus dynamic reminiscent of Weezer and Tame To coincide with his first release for 2014, Pluto Jonze is hitting the road with Ball Park abroad and writing new tunes.
Interview with Pluto Jonze
Question: How would you describe your music?
Pluto Jonze: My mind farting
Question: Can you talk us through the inspiration behind the track, Sucker?
Pluto Jonze: I guess it's about someone or something you just can't say no to, no matter how bad he, she or it is for you. I co-wrote it with Dean McGrath (formerly Hungry Kids of Hungary) and I remember it came about really quickly and organically.
Question: What was it like filming the video for Sucker?
Pluto Jonze: Fun. We had to do most of the takes at double speed, so when they slow it down afterwards it looks like you're singing in time with the music. So we just cut loose and jumped around to this thrash chipmunk punk version of the song. It was cool.
Question: What can you tell us about the upcoming album?
Pluto Jonze: It's a 5-track EP actually. All punchy numbers, lean and mean.
Question: Do you write your own songs?
Pluto Jonze: Yes. Although recently I've gotten more into co-writing, like with Sucker.
Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Pluto Jonze: Mac DeMarco and Cornelius recently blew my mind.
Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?
Pluto Jonze: We're releasing the EP mid-November and touring that in early December.
Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?
Pluto Jonze: There have been set backs and hurdles but I've never really thought of doing anything else. Not into the morning commute.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Pluto Jonze: A few years ago I would have said recording, but now I think I prefer performing live. That immediate connection is something you can never quite recreate in the studio.
Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Pluto Jonze: If I had my way I would have gotten into just the music and not the industry bit. The Beatles, David Bowie, Damon Albarn, Beck have been my big inspirations.
Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?
Pluto Jonze: Keeping a coherent musical style.
Question: What's a typical day like?
Pluto Jonze: There really is no typical day. The routine in music is kind of seasonal, like a farmer maybe. Some months you're writing - that's like planting the seeds, some you're recording or making film clips - like watering the crops, then you're touring and that's the harvest. And then you start all over again. It's never boring but sometimes I think a little more of a consistent routine would be nice
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Pluto Jonze: The freedom and opportunity to express the weirder aspects of myself. And the honour of having some people want to listen!
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Pluto Jonze: Cornelius
Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?
Pluto Jonze: Music
Pizza
Plenty of sleep
Carl Sagan
Unconditional love
