This March Louis Damien Chauremootoo AKA Sifu (Cantonese for teacher) Damien, a master of Kung Fu and student of the legendary Grand Master William Cheung will conduct a self-defense workshop. This is an event for all that will allow anyone who attends the opportunity to develop skills to protect themselves in an emergency situation. The workshop will make use of practical skills and wing chun principles made famous by Bruce Lee!
Sifu Damien is one of a few Kung Fu masters to have his name engraved on a commemorative plaque in the province of Henan, China. This is a direct reflection of his mastery of the practice and speaks towards his capacity to offer important self-defence workshops. The plaque was erected on the occasion of the great return of Wing Chun to the Shaolin Temple with the sculpture also including the names of Robert Downey Jr. and William Cheung, Grand Master of the traditional Wing Chun and disciple of the legendary Ip Man. It was under the tutelage of Grand Master William Cheung that Sifu Damien perfected his mastery of Wing Chun Kung-Fu and became an instructor.
"Over the years I have worked with and been inspired by the likes of Grand Master William Cheung, Hiroo Mochizuki, Scott Adkins, Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Michael Jai White and George St Pierre to name a few." Said Sifu Damien "Low self-worth and fear are suffocating and self-limiting. My passion is to eliminate these barriers, turn hopelessness into hopefulness, strengthen self-belief and allow my students to realise their own capacity which includes being able to defend themselves in an emergency situation".
A native of the Republic of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, Damien moved to Australia as a young man and it wasn't long before he was studying with the famous Grand Master William Cheung. He was also a student of Sensei Alain Uppiah, Sensei Kooram Venkamah and Judex Jeannot, who passed on to him the knowledge of karate, aikido and kick boxing. Now Operations Manager and Chief Instructor at the headquarters of the Global Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Association in Melbourne (Australia) Sifu Damien passes timeless lessons learned over his years to many followers and students around the world. Within the academy, he, along with other masters, including the great Grand Master William Cheung, trains around five hundred people per week. This includes people from all walks of life, ages and professions.
Of key importance to Sifu Damien along with his assistant instructor, Emma Carr (pictured below) is addressing the issue of increased violence against women, both physical and emotional. Their message is that of ultimate empowerment. Nurtured through awareness, general counselling, training and encouragement, women young and old can start at any time and change their future. Through the programs women build their own platform as a formidable force to push back against all forms of abuse, danger and bullying. On the other side of the equation, men who attend and train in the ways of Kung Fu develop a greater sense of self-worth and respect, which has a positive effect on those around them including women.
This workshop will present the opportunity for participants to learn pressure points striking (dim mak), weapon disarming (knives, baseball bat and guns), applying Chisao and wooden dummy techniques in street fighting and the ability to immobilize an opponent using BOEC (a specialized defence system developed by Grand Master Cheung). The workshop is suitable for all levels from beginners to advanced and is open to anyone aged 12 and over. The techniques taught are simple and effective and the workshop will support non-profit organization "The Red Flags DV" a women's domestic violence victim support group.
