Reboot

'5 years ago, I died. 178 minutes later, I woke up.'

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation). Wren's favourite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she's ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he's always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there's something about him she can't ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line - or she'll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she'll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum. The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

Interview with Amy Tintera

Question: What inspired the idea of Reboot?

Amy Tintera: I got the idea for Wren first, and decided to build a story around this character that had been dead for 178 minutes. I wanted to write a story about teenagers who were almost 'bad guys," so I decided to make a world where the humans were terrified of these Reboots, and tell the story from the perspective of the scariest character of all.

Question: What was the best thing about creating the character of Wren?

Amy Tintera: Getting to be in the mind of someone who is a little crazy! Wren doesn't really think like other people, and she definitely has some not-so-nice thoughts. I enjoyed being in the head of someone who wasn't always doing the right thing, but was sort of conflicted about it.

Question: How much of your inspiration for characters comes from real life and real people?

Amy Tintera: The only character who was inspired by my real life is probably Callum. He's not based on any one person, but instead is a sort of mash-up of a lot of guys I know. The male romantic lead in books is so often this stoic, alpha, ultra-hot guy with lots of muscles, and that just wasn't the type of guy I knew and loved. So I created Callum to be a normal, kind of nerdy guy with a sense of humour and a lot of complex feelings and emotions.

Question: Are you currently working on another book? If so, can you tell us about it?

Amy Tintera: Yes! The sequel to Reboot will be out in 2014. I can't say much about it except there will be just as much romance and action in the sequel!
