Experience the ultimate Out of Africa safari far from the madding crowd … without compromising on any of life's little luxuries. Abercrombie & Kent offers the newest walking safari camp on the Africa circuit, Sanctuary Zebra Plains.
Imagine standing in the footsteps of a giant elephant or touching the bark of a tree where only moments earlier a leopard had scratched it. Imagine cocktails and canapés at sunset by the banks of the Luangwa River as hundreds of hippos provide a subtle background chorus. Or tucking into a candlelit dinner served on the finest linen and silverware, before retiring to your luxury tented accommodation. All of these experiences and more represent the ultimate A&K bush adventure without any concessions to comfort and style.
Operating seasonally from June – October each year and opening for the first time in June 2011, Sanctuary Zebra Plains Camp will offer guests a distinctive and unique authentic walking safari experience deep within the pristine wilderness of Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, in combination with luxurious tented accommodation and fine dining. Celebrated safari guide, Garth Hovell, hosts all walking safaris at Sanctuary Zebra Plains.
Perched on the edge of the Luangwa River and accommodating a maximum of just eight guests, a stay at Zebra Plains is an intimate and unforgettable exploration of the South Luangwa. The concentration of wildlife around camp is simply awe-inspiring. On the plains zebra and antelope, giraffe and buffalo, wildebeest and puku congregate in vast numbers alongside lion and leopard patrolling for prey. Rivers and tributaries teem with hippo, elephant and crocodile including the famed Changwa Channel, home to one of the largest hippo populations on earth. A safari on foot under the watchful eye of an experienced expert guide offers the chance to see many of the 400 species of bird as well as sightings of the extremely rare Elephant shrew and Lion ant.
'The walking safari was pioneered in Zambia", says Sujata Raman, Managing Director of Abercrombie & Kent, 'so we are excited to now offer our own refined experience for guests at the new Sanctuary Zebra Plains Camp under the expert eye of A&K's private label guide Garth Hovell".
So embrace your inner David Attenborough and visit one of the last great wilderness areas on earth secure in the knowledge that your every comfort will be attended to at magnificent Sanctuary Zebra Plains Camp, for a truly inspiring and unforgettable travel experience.
The three night camp experience is beautifully contrasted with a three-night lodge stay at the newly reopened and spectacularly sited Sanctuary Chichele also in the South Luangwa. Formerly a private Presidential retreat built in the 1970s; the building has been transformed to create a spectacular 'turn of the century' style safari lodge. Game viewing here is done by 4WD vehicle or on foot and the wildlife is spectacular – there's zebra, antelope, buffalo and puku in herds on the plains alongside endemic species such as the Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and unique Crawshay's zebra. There's predators too including lion, leopard and the elusive wild dog whilst the rivers and tributaries are teeming with hippo, elephant and crocodile. There are also over 400 species of birds.
