Servo Flowers Messed Up

2019 proved to be a fruitful one for Perth songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Mac, aka Servo Flowers. Quickly cultivating a presence and following for himself locally with the release of his debut single, 'King of The Suburbs (For The Night)', Servo Flowers now followed things up with the announcement of a new single - 'Messed Up'.

The song further explores Servo Flowers' realm of influences as he delves into some gorgeous alt-indie territory, rich in texture and delivery. Continuing to add to the list of impressive music coming out of the Australian West Coast, 'Messed Up' is a fitting way to introduce this new chapter for Servo Flowers. Having already generated buzz for his music off the back of praised gigs with a range of artists from the likes of Dulcie to Drapht, Servo Flowers has been able to prove early that his scope for music and live performance is a wide one. 

Recorded at his home studio in Fremantle, 'Messed Up' was sent to Joel Waddell (PulseFour Music) for mixing before landing with Randy Merrill (Sterling Sound) to be mastered. The intimacy of the song matches Servo Flowers' approach to his craft.  Maintaining that connection between the lyrics and the arrangement of the music is something that prompts a hazy, nostalgic feel to the end product. "'Messed Up' was one of those rare songs that came out basically finished on the first play-through. As a result, the lyrics are simple but personal, detailing a literal car-crash that coincides with the breakdown of a relationship. I spent over two years playing around with the song to figure out the perfect way to represent the simplicity of the tune and elevate it with my usual process of adding layers upon layers of samples." With the current COVID-19 situation forcing musicians around the country back into their homes and studios, Servo Flowers has been making good use of the lockdown to further prepare for the release of his debut EP, Joey Car Crash. Connecting with a songwriting idol in Eskimo Joe's Kav Temperley and having the opportunity to collaborate and bring ideas to life has been an invaluable experience for the songwriter.
